B. H. BALMPORTH.
VENEER. No. 411,634. Patented Sept. 24, 1889. I
Wifqessez. Irp/El-HUK UNITED STATES PATENT rrrcn.
ELLIOTT H. BALMFORTH, OF VAKEFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO SAMUEL ABBOTT, OF SAME PLACE.
VENEER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,634, dated September 24, 1889. Application filed December 27, 1887. Renewed January 29, 1889. Serial No. 297,983. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELLIOTT H. BALMFORTH, of Wakefield, county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Veneers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel and cheap yet durable veneer especially adapted to be used for dadoing, Wainscoting, boxes and like purposes.
In accordance with my invention my improved veneer is made of bamboo or other analogous ligneous material, such as peppercane and Japanese cane.
Bamboo possesses a rich and variegated appearance, and when employed as veneering for dadoing, wainscot-ing, boxes, and like purposes produces a very pretty effect; but prior to my invention bamboo has not been employed for veneering purposes on account of its peculiar oily nature, which precluded the employment of glue and like adhesive material to secure the veneer of bamboo to the body or surface to be veneered.
The bamboo untreated or in its natural state, owing to its oily nature referred to, does not present a surface to which the glue can adhere with sufficient force to retain the said bamboo against the surface to be veneered. I have discovered by experiments that the bamboo and canes of the classes referred to may be made to adhere to the body to be veneered by means of glue or like adhesive substance by scoring or otherwise providing the surface of the bamboo, and preferably of the body to which it is to be attached, with corrugations, saw-cuts, or grooves, preferably extended in the direction of the grain or fiber of the wood, the said corrugations, &c., preseuting increased surface to be acted upon by the glue.
My invention therefore consists, essentially, 4 5 in an improved article of manufacture-a veneered body consisting of a body or surface and a veneer of cane provided with corrugations and secured to said body by adhesive material, substantially as will be described.
Figure 1 shows a sufficient portion of a bamboo-veneered body to enable my invention to be understood; Fig. 2, an end view of the same, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a detail to be referred to.
The body a, preferably of white, but which 5 5 may be of any other desired, wood, is provided with a veneer a of bamboo or other analogous ligneous 1naterilsuoh as pepper and Japanese canes-secured thereto by an intervening layer a (see Fig. 2) of glue or other like adhesive material. To enable the veneer of bamboo to be secured to the body 0; by glue, I have preferably provided one surface of the body a with corrugations, saw-cuts, or scorings a and have provided the surface of the veneer a, with similar corrugations or saw-cuts of, the said corrugations being preferably extended in the direction of the fiber or grain of the wood. The corrugations a a present increased holding-surface for the glue to act upon and enable glue to be used to secure the veneer a to the body a,
I have herein described the body a as made of wood; but I do not desire to limit my invention to the use of wood, as canvas or other woven or textile fabric may be used as a backing for the veneer.
I claim- 1. As an improved article of manufacture,
a veneered body consisting of a body or sur 8o face and a veneer a of cane, substantially as described,'provided with corrugations and secured to the said body by adhesive material, substantially as described.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, 8 5 a veneered body consisting of a body a, provided with corrugations a and a veneer a of bamboo provided with corrugations (1- and secured to the body a by glue, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- ELLIOTT ll. BALMFORTH.
