, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
HENRY E. GILSON, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
TRUNK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,005, dated'February 5, 1884.
Application filed October 18, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY E. GILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks; and I do hereby declare that the same are fully described in the following specification and illus trated in the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in trunks, traveling-cases, 850., and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in whichtogether and having the grain of the wood alternately laid obliquely or at a right angle to the layer negt'to it, so as to obtain a very strong and durable trunlcbody of a very light weight; and in order to increasethe strength of the trunk and make it more elastic, I interpose between each veneer a sheet of cloth or suitable textile or fibrous material glued to and between two or more. successive veneers in the series, and also, to make it still more durable, I use as an outer veneer orexternal sheet, I), a'layer of vulcanized fiber, rawhide, or any other suitable material, which veneer or external covering is applied and secured to the body of the trunk, either before i or after it is put together, as may be desired,
the body and top of the trunk in this my invention having the above-described veneers to take the place of the vulcanized fiber shown in the patents of June 3, 1879, and June 15, 1880. The abutting edges of the trunk are provided with rawhide angle-pieces c c, riveted to the bottom, sides, and em" s by means of suitable rivets, as shown.
suitable rivets in the ordinary way.
(1 d are rawhide cornercaps riveted at the corners, as shown.
e e are molded rawhide bindingstrips riw eted to the outside of thetrunk-body, as shown.
6 0 represent re-enforcing strips at the upper edge of the trunk-body, which are preferably molded to fold over both outside and inside of the upper edges of the trunk-body, as shown in Fig. 2, and secured by means of The top is also made of three or more veneers, f f f, glued together and provided with an outer covering, f, in the same manner as described when referring to the trunk'body. The top is provided on its outer edge with a molded valance or overhanging lip, made of rawhide and riveted to it, as shown, the corners being protected by means of molded rawhide cornor-caps h h h, secured to the top by means of rivets, as shown.
1 i are molded rawhide binding-strips riveted to the outside of the cover or top, as shown.
The top is hinged to the trunk-body by means of rawhide or metal hinges, as usual.
The trunk made as above described is much stronger and lighter than trunks made of one single sheet of wood, and is not liable to warping and cracking, so common with the kind of trunks above mentioned.
lVhat I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim, is-
The within-described trunk, having its top and body composed of several veneers of wood, with the grain of one veneer crossing the grain of the other, and a sheet of suitable textile or fibrous material interposedbetween the veneers and glued thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my sig nature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY E. GILSON.
