UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR THOMPSON, OF WARNER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,251, dated April 18, 1876; application filed January 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR THOMPSON, of Warner, Merrimack county, New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Mat, of which the following is a specification:
My invention is a new article of manufacture, consisting of a mat of excelsior, mounted on and attached to a backing of paper, card-board, cloth or sac-king, the object being to provide a simple and efficient and cheap mat for omnibuses, street-cars, and the like.
The excelsior is spread out in a layer on the backing or foundation, more or less thick, and sewed, tacked, or otherwise fastened to it.
Figure 1 is a plan of my improved mat, with one corner turned up to show the i'oundation, and Fig. 2 is a section showing how the excelsior may be sewed to the foundation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the foundation of paper; B, the mat of excelsior, and O the twine, by which the top and the foundation are secured together. Other means of fastening may be employed-for instance, they may be tacked or riveted, the tacks and rivets being clinched on the under side, and having good broad heads on the upper side, and, if necessary, washers of leather or other substance may be used.
Having thus described my invention, I elai m as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A mat, faced on the upper side with the wood stock known as cxcelsior, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ARTHUR THOMPSON. Witnesses:
HENRY L. HARRIS, ROBERT THOMPSON.
