- This improved manufacture from paper-pulp and sponge relates to that described in the Letters Patent issued to me, dated April 16, 1872, and November 1l, 1873, Nos. 125,740 and 144,548, respectively; and it consists in combining' with said sheet manufacture from paper-pulp and sponge a backing of cloth, or of paper, or of both cloth and paper, cloth being most preferable, which backing is applied to the same with cement or otherwise, so as to adhere thereto. This backing strengthens the said sheet of paper-pulp and sponge without materially detracting from its flexibility.

IMPROVEMENT IN SPONGE AND PULP FABRICS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1617,259, dated August 31, 1875; application filed February 8, 1875. y
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. KENDALL, of Foxborough, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Manufacture from Paper-Pulp and Sponge, of which the following is a specification:
This improved manufacture from paper-pulp and sponge relates to that described in the Letters Patent issued to me, dated April 16, 1872, and November 1l, 1873, Nos. 125,740 and 144,548, respectively; and it consists in combining' with said sheet manufacture from paper-pulp and sponge a backing of cloth, or of paper, or of both cloth and paper, cloth being most preferable, which backing is applied to the same with cement or otherwise, so as to adhere thereto. This backing strengthens the said sheet of paper-pulp and sponge without materially detracting from its flexibility. It enables a sheet of any size to be made up from several pieces of sheet-sponge and paper-pulp, and paper-pulp are to be used as a substitute for oil-cloths, as described in my Letters Patent dated November 1l, 1873, hereinbefore referred to, it also serves to smooth and even the surface of the sheet paper-pulp and sponge for the reception of the paint by which it is to be ornamented, after being flrst prepared with oil, as described in said patent.
In the accompanying plate of drawings the gure shows a sectional view of the improved manufacture from paper-pulp and sponge embraced herein.
In the drawings, A represents a sheet of and when the sheet-sponge paper-pulp and sponge made in accordance with my Letters Patent dated April 16, 1872, hereinbefore referred to. 1
B is a backing of cloth, applied by cement,
or in any suitable manner to one surface, a, of y said sheet A. This backing B may be of paper instead of cloth, or of paper and cloth combined, cloth being preferable, and a similar backing may be applied to the other surface, b, of sheet A, but for ordinary purposes it is sufficient to back only one side, to obtain the results hereinbefore described of its use.
By the ligure of the drawing the pulp and sponge sheet is shown as made up of vseveral pieces, the division-lines being at c c, and in this case, if so desired, the line of these seams maybe further protected by applying strips cl of cloth or paper, or of both cloth and paper, to them on the opposite surface of the paper-pulp and sponge sheet to that backed by the backing B, hereinbefore referred to.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
An article of manufacture consisting of sponge and pulp filling, and a backing connected therewith, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
