Specification formingr part of Letters Patent No. 142,439, dated September 2, 1873; application filed f February 1, 1873. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. CLARK, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Fabric for Carpetings;
and that the following is a full, clear, and eir-y `act description -of the same, reference being terial, one sheet of Manila paper, a, and one sheet of burlap, b, the two being united, preferably, by a water-repellent cement applied to either one or both of the faces of the paper or burlap to be united. The exposed surface of the burlap is 'subsequently ornamented by printing the same in colors in any of the wellknown methods.
A carpeting made as described is, of course, manufactured in continuous lengths.
I am aware that a compound fabric made of paper and a woven fabric united by a suitable cement is not new 5 but such is not my invention. ing has been applied to certain kinds of carpets to allow them to be stretched; but this I do not claim.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In the manufacture of iioorcarpeting composed of burlap, uniting to the burlap by a suitable cement a backing of paper, and then printing on the face of the burlap suitable patterns or figures.
