ilNiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD T. GRAVEN, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWIN R. BURKE, OF SAME PLACE.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,295, dated November l0, 1885.
Application tiled September 24, 1884. Serial No. 143,856.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l', EDWARD T. CRAVEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in shirts and bosoms therefor; and it has for its objects to provide the bosom with a binding forming a reenforccd edge made up of several thicknesses of material, which will hold the starch and form a stiff edge to the bosom, keeping it in shape, and rendering the bosom much more durable than as heretofore made and secured to the shirt. These objects are attained by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a front View of a shirt having the bosom partly attached thereto.v Fig. 2 represents a rear View of the shirt and bosom. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of Fig. l. Fig. 4. represents a front view of the bosom Jfinished and attached to the shirt. Fig. 5 represents asectional view showing the binding partially applied to the shirt and bosom. Fig. 6 represents a sectional View of the iinished shirt and bosom, and Fig. 7 represents a detached view of the re-enforce.
The letter A indicates the shirt-body, and Bthe bosom. The front of the bosomis formed of iine linen stitched to a backing, a, of coarse material, by the stitches forming the pleat bat the front of the bosom, leaving the edges of the lining or backing and the front ofthe bosom free to be attached to the shirt, as hereinafter specied.
In securing the shirt to the bosom the edges (No model.)
of the lining o f the bosom are stitched to the edges ofthe opening at the front of the shirtbody, as indicated by the letter c, Fig. l, of the drawings. The edge of the :re-enforce C is then set between the edges of the bosom, its lining, and the edge of the opening at the front oi the body of the shirt, a strip of linen, d, being placed under the edge of the bosom. The bosom-strip, re-enforce, and lining are then stitched together by a line of stitching, e, leaving one edge of strip free, as indicated by the letter g. The strip is then folded longitudinally, as indicated by the letter h, and turned over the edge of the bosom, and stitched down on the bosom by a line of stitching, t'.
It will be seen that as thus constructed the bosom is securely fastened to the shirt, and at the same time provided with a re-enforced border, which will hold a large quantity of starch, and will preserve the shape of the bosom. Moreover, the border renders the shirt and bosom much more durable than heretofore.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The method of securing a shirt-bosom to the front opening of a shirt-body, the same consisting in stitching the lining to the edge of the opening with an interposed strip and the re-enforce, and in folding and turning the strip over the edge of the bosom, and securing the whole by a line of stitches, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD T. CRAVEN.
