SYLVESTER L. CARE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TROUSERS-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,181, dated December 20, 1892.
Serial No. 425,667. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER L. CARR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shoe-Attachment Trousers-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for protecting the bottoms of trousers legs from mud and wet by supporting the same from the shoe.
The object of my invention is to provide a device for this purpose of a simple and neat construction which may be quickly and conveniently attached and removed, and by means of which the back portion of the tron sers-leg may be supported at any necessary height and at the same time leaves the trousers leg to hang naturally and freely without binding and which will not interfere with the customary and convenient slight lifting of the trousers leg in sitting down or when the knee is bent or one ankle rested upon the other knee.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 shows the position the device assumes when the pants leg is lifted and the knee bent; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the hinged or folding hook and clamp; Fig. 4. is a front perspective view.
In the drawings A represents the trousers leg, B the shoe and b the shoe strap or loop. Attached to the shoe strap 1) is a toothed spring clamp D D; and hinged to the lower end of the back plate D of the clamp is a hook C of about the same length as the clamp, so that the hinge 0 comes approximately in the middle of the combined device. The hook and clamp are hinged or combined together reversely, so that the lip C of the hook and the movable or lever jaw D of the clamp are on opposite sides. The clamp is made of sheet metal and each jaw or plate thereof is furnished with teeth d adapted to engage and hold the shoe strap or loop I). The back plate D of the clamp is furnished with ears d to which similar ears d on the lever jaw D are pivoted by a pin C1 The lever jaw D has a projecting end (1 by which the clamp may be opened with the thumb or finger. A coilspring d surrounding the pivot pin 02 and having two projecting ends 01 d serves to hold the clamp closed. As the clamp is reversely combined or hinged to the hook, the smooth back plate D ofthe clamp is outermost so that it will serve as a guide in directing the edge a. of the pants leg into the open lip of the hook and so that the pro jecting end d of the lever arm D will notinterfere. The eyes or rolls d and c which constitute the hinge by which the hook and and clamp are pivoted together so that they may fold the one upon the other, are formed upon the same side of the plates DC that the lever arm D occupies, so that the hinge will not interfere with the insertion of the edge of the pants leg in the hook. The lip C of the hook projects somewhat above the hinge, preferably about as indicated in the drawings and it is provided with a bend c to better retain the edge of the pants leg in place. The hook C is made of a single piece of flat sheet metal and is formed by bending it upon itself, as indicated in the drawings. As the combined hook and clamp is attached to the shoe strap and as the hook and clamp are hinged together, the pants leg while supported at its lower edge nevertheless hangs freely aud naturally and without binding or discomfort to the wearer and the pants leg may also be lifted as indicated or drawn up freely and conveniently, the combined hook and clamp turning or folding on its hinge in the manner indicated in Fig. 2.
The bond 0 at the end of the lip or outer member C of the hook enables the edge of the pants leg to be conveniently inserted between the back plate C of the hook and the lip C thereof, and at the same time to grasp or clamp the edge of the pants leg firmly between the two parts Cand C of the hook and thus securely retain the same in the hook. The hook C C is made of flat sheet metal, and should be sufficiently wide so that the clamping or spring action between the two parts C C of the hook will serve to retain the edge of the pants leg in position therein. The curved or bent end 0 of the lip or outer member C of the hook is necessary in order to properly clamp the edge of the pants leg,
and also to permit the ready insertion of such edge within the hook.
I do not claim as my invention the devices shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States Nos. 308,583 and 383,500, and in British Patent No. 5,296 of 1890. In my invention it is essential that the two limbs or parts 0 O, of the hook should fit close together and co-operate with each other to clamp the edge of the pants leg between them.
1 claim:
The shoe attachmenttrousers supporter consisting in the combination with clamp plate D having teeth at and pivot ears cl, of lever clamp plate D having teeth at and pivot ears (1 a pivot pin and a spring surrounding said pivot pin and a hook C hinged to the back plateD having its open end or lip G on the opposite side from said lever arm D, said hook 0 being made of flat sheet metal and having its open end or lip O fitting close to the back plate of said hook, and adapted to clamp and hold the edge of the pants leg and furnished with a bend a, substantially as specified.
