SKIRT-SUPPORTER- Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERBERT C. DEANE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Skirt-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in skirtsupporters and waist-holders; and it consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and clalmed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the device as in use, the skirt and waist being secured by the holder. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the holder with the slides adjusted to release the jaws. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail perspective views of the sections of the holder; and Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the holder, indicating in dotted lines how the lower jaws may be compressed to expand the upper jaws.

By my invention I seek to provide an improved device for use in securing a skirt to a shirt-waist and to provide for holding the skirt and shirt-waist with the roper set in the back. At the same time I seek to provide a device which can be readily applied for use and whose simplicity of construction will permit of its being manufactured and sold at a small cost.

As shown, the holder comprises two simi lar plates A, provided at their ends with upper jaws B and with lower jaws O and having the opposite pairs ofjaws B and C connected by cross-plates D. These cross-plates D are secured rigidly together near their middles, preferably by rivets F, and are spread slightly apart toward their ends, where they join the pairs of jaws, so that the slides E when moved to the ends of the plates D may close the jaws securely together and when moved to the central osition may release the jaws, as desired. T e upper jaws B are elongated laterally at their upper edges, and one of the jaws of each plate is provided with an inturned lip B, which slightly overlaps the opposite jaw of the other plate (see Fig. 5) in order to secure a firm hold upon the fabric of the shirt-waist and hold the same down without tearing the garment, as will be understood from Fig. 1.- The lower jaws have their lower edges slightly outturned and are provided a short distance above said lower edges with inwardly-projecting teeth 0,

preferably struck out of the material of the jaws and are arranged to form fulcra, whereby the compressing of the lips of the lower' jaw toward each other will cause the upper jaws to open when the slide is moved to released position. This will be best understood from Fig. 5 of the drawings and greatly facilitates the application of the holder to the fold of the shirt-waist.

The holder forms a simple means of supporting the skirt and holding the waist down at the back, and the placing of these garments with the holder may be readily and conveniently accomplished. The holder being formed of thin flat plates which lie close to the body will not present an objectionable appearance when the belt is placed over the same.

In practice the holder may be made of brass or other suitable material and may be nickeled or otherwise finished to suit.

It will be understood I do not wish to confine myself to the precise construction herein described, but reserve the right to make such changes as come within the spirit and scope of the invention.

As best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the two plates are alike, and one of the upper jaws of each plate is provided with an inturned lip, which overlies the upper edge of the opposite jaw of the same plate when the jaws are united, as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawin s.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A holder substantially as herein described, comprising two thin plates having at their ends the upper and lower jaws, one of the upper jaws of each plate having the inturned lip overlapping the opposite jaw of the other plate and elongated laterally and adapted to engage a-shirt-waist and the lower jaws having their lips outturned and provided with inwardly-projecting teeth adapted to secure a skirt and to form fulcra whereby the pressing of the lips of the lower jaws toward each other will spread or open the upper jaws, the cross-plates connecting the jaws at the opposite ends of the holder, said cross-plates being secured together at their middles and spread 'or flared toward their ends, and the slides on said cross-plates and adapted for adjustment to close or release the end jaws, substantially as set forth.

2. A holder comprising a pair of plates and IIO 5 plates, substantially as set having at its ends upper jaws to engage a shirt-waist and lower jaws to secure a skirt,

cross-plates between the opposite pairs of jaws, and slides operating on said crossorth.

3. A holder provided at each of its opposite ends with a pair of opposing upper jaws and a pair of opposing lower jaws adapted to secure a shirt-waist and a skirt, substantially 10 as described.

4. A holder provided at each of its opposite ends with upper jaws to secure a shirt-waist and with lower jaws to secure a skirt and provided between said jaws with means whereby r 5 they may be held in closed position, substansaid flared edges with inwardly-projecting teeth adapted to secure a skirt and to serve as a fulcrum in compressing the flared ends of the jaws for spreading the upper jaws, substantially as described.

6. A holder consisting of two plates similar in form and'outline and provided at their ends with upper jaw-sections and lower j awsections and with cross plates connecting vtheir end portions, and means for securing these cross-plates together at their middles, and slides operating on the cross-plates between their rniddles and their end portions, substantially as described.
