PYROTECHNIC DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,899, dated December 13, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE J. M. ASHBY, formerly of London, England, but now residing at Coney Island, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Pyrotechnic Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of pyrotechnics which represent moving figures, the object of my invention being to impart such motion to parts of the apparatus as will give the figures of a woman or man the appearance of dancing, walking, &c.

In carrying out my invention I employ a skeleton wooden framework, as usual, and upon which the pyrotechnic devices are secured in the desired design or shape and arrangement, so that when lighted the figure of a woman or man is represented in colors. Part of this frame is removed, conforming to the profile of the figure, and a supplemental frame showing a continuation of the figure is pivotally connected to the main frame and behind the same. This supplemental frame is to be moved back and forth, alternately hiding and bringing into view the partial design or figure representation, so as to give the appearance of motion thereto.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating my invention by the figure of a dancing woman. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan at as m in larger size, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the supplemental frame.

The open-work or latticed frame is represented at a, and at a, behind or at the'back of said frame, I have represented a covering of Wood or metal, which extends over the-lower part of said frame a from the waist of the figure down.

The supplemental frame is represented at b, and said frame is pivotally connected to the frame a at 4 by a suitable spindle or bolt, which passes through the upper left-hand corner of the frame I). A handle I) is connected to the back of the frame b, and by it said frame I) is moved back and forth on the pivot 4, the plane of movement of said frame being some inches behind the frame a, so as to allow ample space for securing to said frame the pyrotechnic devices representing part of the figure.

I have represented at c letters or words in pyrotechnics at the upper end of the frame a, and I have also represented on the frame a at e the head, bust, arms, skirts, and one foot of a female figure, the other foot and a continued part of the skirt being at e upon the supplemental frame I), the lower edge of the skirt and the feet being arranged on the frames on and b on the arc of a circle whose center is the pivot 4, so that when the pyrotechnics are burning and the frame I) is moved back and forth the representation is 'produced of the figure moving and dancing, because the design on the frame I) alternately appears at the side of the frame a and disappears behind it. I may also place the pyrotechnic devices of the head and head-gear upon a similarly constructed and moving frame, so as to make the head appear to move.

It is obvious that the figures of women and men, cit-her dancing, walking, jumping, 850., could be arranged in a generally-similar manner, and I do not strictly confine myself to the dancing female figure.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with a frame carrying pyrotechnic devices or figures in design and partially cut away on the profile of the figure, of a supplemental frame carrying a continued part of the same design connected to the main frame and adapted to be moved back and forth, so as to alternately expose and conceal the portion of the figure upon the supplemental frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

The combination, with the frame a and its backing-piece a, carrying pyrotechnic figures in design and partially cut away on the profile of the figure, of a supplemental frame 1), pivotally connected at 4 to the frame a and carrying a continued portion of the figure and adapted to be moved back and forth to alternately expose and conceal the-figure on the frame I), substantially as and for the purposes. set forth.
