I This invention relates in general to toys and more particularly has reference to a doll.

It is an object of this invention to provide a doll which shall be capable of presenting selectively any one of four different characters, each of which may be differently yet completely costumed.

It is an object that each character presented by the doll shall have a different type of headdress to go with the remainder of the costume provided for that character, yet in which no headdress will interfere with the appearance of any other headdress.

It is a further object of this invention to pro vide the doll with a full skirt which shall serve for each of the four characters, providing a different costume for each, and to provide a means whereby the skirt will be spread so as to display its fullness regardless of which character the doll is being used to present.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention embodies the various parts and arrangements thereof as set forth in the appended claims, and as illustrated and described by way of example in the accompanying drawings and the following specification. With reference more particularly to the drawings in which like numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout:

Figure 1 is a view illustrating one of the characters which the doll is capable of representing.

Figure 2 is a view illustrating the character appearing on the reverse side of the doll when in the position illustrated in Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a view illustrating a third character which may be presented by the doll of this invention when the same is inverted with respect to the position shown in Figures 1 and 2, and the skirt drawn down to cover the portion of the body appearing in Figures 1 and 2.

Figure 4 is a view illustrating a fourth character appearing on the reverse side of the doll when in the position illustrated in Figure 3.

Figure 5 is a vertical cross section taken through the doll of this invention and illustrating the relative position of the various characters and faces which the doll is capable of presenting.

In accordance with this invention, a body is provided having its central portion 1 slightly reduced in size and forming the waist of the finished doll. This body extends in opposite directions from the 'waist 1 and provides a pair of bust portions generally indicated at 2 and 3, two pairs of arms generally indicated at 4 and .5, and a pair of heads on its opposite ends generally indicated at 6 and '7.

In order that one of the characters presented by this invention might have a different color from the others, one of the bust portions 3 is made of two colors, one of said colors covering one entire face 8 of said bust portion, and the other color covering the opposite face 9. Likewise, the corresponding arms 5 are each provided with one portion 10 of the first color and another portion 11 of the second. The corresponding head has its face 12 made of the first color and its face 13 made of the second.

In order that the doll of this invention might present four separate and distinct characters, the head 6 is provided with a face 14 on one side thereof and a face 15 on the opposite side, while the head 7 is provided with a third face 16 on one side thereof and a fourth face 17 on the opposite side.

Associated with the face 14 and mounted upon head 6 is a headdress consisting of a wig 18 provided with a hairriobon 19. Associated with the face 15 and mounted on head 6 is a headdress consisting of a wig 20 and a head covering 21 in the form of a half hat. The wigs 18 and 20 are oppositely disposed with respect to each other. It is to be noted that the covering 21 is of such width that it will not extend past the central plane of the head 6, that is to say of a width not to extend upon the wig 18 and hence will not interfere with the appearance of the character depicted by the face 14. The covering 21 simulates the appearance of a complete hat.

Associated with the face 16 and mounted against the top or outer end of the head 7 is a headdress consisting of a wig 22 and a head covering 23 in the form of a half cap or bonnet. Associated with the face 17 and mounted against the top or outer end of the head 7 is a headdress consisting of a wig 25 and a head covering 26 in the form of a half cap or bonnet. The wigs 22 and 25 are oppositely disposed with respect to each other and a like arrangement is had with respect to the coverings 23, 26. These latter simulate the appearance of complete caps or bonnets. The covering 23 as shown in Figures 3 and, 4 is visible only from the side on which the face 16 appears whereas the covering 26 is visible only from the side on which the face 1'7 appears. Thus neither headdress interferes with the appearance of the others. These coverings 23, 26 are constructed of two separate pieces of cloth secured about the top and sides of the head adjacent the central portion thereof, and having their outer edges stitched or otherwise secured together.

Referring now to Figures 1 and 5, it will be seen that on one side of the bust portion 2 of the body is provided with a waist covering 27 in the form of a sleeveless half-waist and which may be decorated with any suitable means such as the bow 28 and the buttons 29. At the lower end of this waist covering 27 there is provided ahalf-belt portion 30 which is secured at 31 by stitching or the like to the lower edge of the waist member.

On the opposite side of the bust portion 2 Figures 2 and 5, there is provided a second waist covering 32 in the form of a sleeveless halfwaist and which is different in design from the first waist covering 27. Associated with and of the same design as covering 32 is a half-belt portion secured to the lower edge of the waist covering 32 as indicated at 34 by stitching or any other means which may be found suitable.

To the lower edge of the belt portion 30 a halfskirt portion 35 is secured by means of stitching or the like 36. Similarly, a half-skirt portion 37 is secured at the lower edge of the belt 33 at the point 38. The skirt portion 35 is made of a pattern corresponding to that of the belt 30 and the waist covering 27, out of which pattern the hat 21 may also be formed if desired. The skirt portion 37 is likewise formed of a pattern corresponding to that of the belt 33 and the waist 32. The skirt portions 37 and 35 are secured together at 39 and 40 on the opposite sides of the body. The waist coverings 27 and 32 are likewise secured together on top of the respective shoulders at 41 and 42. Thus, each of the characters depicted by the faces 14 and 15 are provided with entirely separate and different costumes each of which appears complete in itself.

With reference to Figures 3 and 5, there is shown on one side of the bust portion 3 a waist covering 43 in the form of a sleeveless half-waist having secured to its inner or lower edge a halfbelt portion 44 in the same manner as the halfbelt portions 30 and 33 are secured respectively to the waist coverings 2'7 and 32.

With reference to Figures 4 and 5, there is shown on the other side of the bust portion 3 a waist covering 45 in the form of a sleeveless half-waist having secured to its inner or lower edge a half-belt portion 46 in the same manner as the half- belt portions 30 and 33 are secured respectively tothe waist coverings 27 and 32. Buttons 47, if desired, may be secured to the waist covering 45. The latter is of a different design with respect to the waist covering 43.

With reference to Figures 3, 4 and 5, there is shown secured to the inner or lower parts of the half- belt portions 44, 46 the inner or upper ends of half-skirt portions 48, 49 respectively which are secured together at their sides at opposite sides of the body 1, as at 50: 51 respec tively. The half-skirt portions 43, 49 are of different designs. The waist coverings 43. 44 are secured together in the same manner as the waist coverings 27, 32.

The coverings 27, 32 and the coverings 43, 45 provide a pair of oppositely disposed waist elements, each having what may be termed a double front. Each waist element is formed of two sections.

In order to prevent the two skirts from separating and to enable them to be reversed more easily when the body of the doll is inverted, these two skirts are stitched or otherwise secured together at their lower edges 52.

It will now be clearly apparent from the above description and accompanying drawings that a means has been provided for carrying out all of the objects of this invention.

With particular reference to Figure 2, it will be seen from the dotted lines that the outspread arms 5 serve to spread the double facing skirt which is made full so that it will always be in its spread position. It will readily be seen that the same would occur when the body of the doll is in its inverted position as shown in Figures 3 and 4. It is noted further in connection with Figures 2 and 5 that in Figure 5 the head 7 is shown as being entirely within the double facing skirt, and that this skirt is shown as extending downwardly below the head. However, when the doll is set down so that this head portion rests on a support, the double facing skirt by virtue of its stiffness and the fact that it is spread by the arms 5 will come in contact with the support all around the head and will serve to support the doll in an upright position.

While it will be appreciated that various different arrangements and ornamentations of the doll may be made and that different characters and costumes may be employed, such changes may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention as set forth in the appended claims.

What I claim is:

1. In a toy doll for selectively simulating the front of one of a series of different characters differently dressed, an invertible body formed of a pair of oppositely extending double bust portions, a head at the outer end of each of said portions and being formed with a pair of oppositely disposed faces simulating different characters, the faces of one head simulating characters different from those simulated by the faces of the other head, the busts of each double bust portions being oppositely disposed, a pair of arms extending laterally from each double bust portion, one pair of arms being oppositely disposed with respect to the other pair of arms, a pair of double front forming waist elements, each of said double elements being formed of two opposed spaced sectionsof different designs, the designs of the sections of one of said double element being different from that of the designs of the sections of the other, each of said double elements being mounted against the outer end of and encompassing a double bust portion, each pair of arms extending through a waist element, a pair of invertible skirts, one having its front outside in one position and the other its front inside in the same position and each being formed of two sections of different designs, the designs of the sections of one skirt being different from the designs of the sections of the other skirt, one of said skirts being selectively housed in the other, said skirts in either of said positions concealing one of said heads, each section of a skirt being associated with and spaced from the inner end of a section of a waist element, two pair of independent half belt portions, each half belt portion extending from the inner end of a section of a waist element to the inner end of a skirt section, and spaced parallel rows of stitching for anchoring a half belt portion to the inner end of a section of a waist element and to the inner endof a skirt section.

2. A toy doll of the construction set forth by claim 1 having combined therewith a wig mounted upon the outer terminus of each head for each face, a pair of oppositely disposed head coverings of different designs mounted upon the wigs on one head, and a head covering mounted upon one of the wigs on the other head.
