SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,311, dated December 6, 1892.

Be it known that LMORRIS WISE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Heels, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in heels for boots or shoes, said heels being detachable or readily removable and attachable; and the invention consists in certain novel features set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the anneXed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the heel sectioned along .fr c3, Fig. 2. In the drawings, the letter A indicates the sole to which the heel is to be attached, and B is the heel. The heel is secured to the sole by one or more staples C, having an eye D, and by means of a plate E, having an eye F corresponding to the eye D, a key G being made to interlock the eyes, so as to secure the heel in place. By withdrawing the key or locking device G the heel is free to be removed.
In Figs. 1 to 3 the staples C are shown connected to the sole A and the plate E to the heel B; but manifestly the same result is attained in Figs. 8 to 10, where the staple is connected to the heel, and the plate E to the sole or to the upper or fixed portion of the heel.
By forming the staple C with a suitable head, as seen in Figs. 6 and 13, and inserting the staple in a suitable hole or recess of such size as to prevent the passage of the head,
The plate E or head of staple C can be readily protected by one or more lifts I., secured to the heel, as in Figs. l, 8, and 14..
To withdraw the key G, any suitable pinchers or tool is employed, the key in Fig. 14 having a shoulder II for the ready engagement of a tool.
In Figs. 14. to 16 the plate E is shown concealed in the sole A or between two thicknesses of sole, and the key G is slid into place along a suitable channel or way M in the sole. When the key is in place, a suitable fillingpiece N is made to close the channel, so that the attaching mechanism is concealed, instead of being exposed or partly exposed, as in Figs. 1 or 8, where the key G is seen partly exposed.
The staples C, with their heads, are formed or struck from flat metal and require but narrow slits or openings to allow them to be inserted or removed. Each staple is independent from the other, so that they can be independently removed or inserted, and each staple is made ot' the desired length to obtain a firm hold. The plate E is also formed from flat metal and is readily bent to form the loop-like projections F, which are formed to correspond to the opening D in the staple, as seen in Fig. t.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a removable heel, of independently-removable staples C, formed of flat pieces of sheet metal and provided with eyes at one end, a plate E, struck up from sheet metal with a series of loop projections F, corresponding in shape t-o the eyes in the staples, and a key passing through the loops and eyes, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a sole and a removable heel, each having interlocking eyes, of a key for engaging said eyes, said sole having an interior or concealed channel or way located within the boot or shoe for the key, substantially as described.
