Description

. g fw N; PETERS, PHoTo-LITHDGHAPHER. WASHINGTON o c CHARLES W. BAILEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 96,538, dated Neeembee 9, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN DETACHABLE BOOT AND SHOE-HERES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that'I, CHARLES W. BAILEY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvevments in Boot and Shoe-Heels and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hadA to the accompanying drawings. making a part of this specification. in whic Figure lis a plan of a portion of a boot or shoe. sole, with the heel removed, and showing that portion ofthe heel-astening that is permanently aliixed to the sole; Figure 2 is a plan of the heel, removed from the boot, andvsllowing the other parts of the fastening;
Figure 3 is a vertical longitudinal section, through centre of'sole, heel, and fastening; and
Figure 4 is a transverse section of the same. My invention relates, in 'the first place, to anim- `proved manufacture of detachable wooden heels vfor boots and shoes; and consists in making the same of wood, with the grain of the wood presented.- endwise to the wearing-surface, and provided with devices, to be described by which the heel may be detached fron.- and replacedlupon the sole of the boot or shoe, as may be desired by the wearer.
My invention relates, in the second place, to the manner of constructing the connecting-devices for connecting a detachable heel to a'boot-or shoe, and is an limprovement upon the devices for that purpose, de-
scribed in Letters Patent granted to me, January 29, 1867, No. 61,502; and consists in arranging the plate that is attached to the sole and the plate that' is at' tached to'the heel inthe same plane, the oneA enclos'- ing or. embracing the other, in combinationwithsuitable latches or latching-devices for securing the two together. I i
My invention relates, 'in the thirdplace, to the method of forming the recesses in the heel where required, to receive the connecting-devices, without cutting; and-consists in embossing or indenting the fibres ofthe wood sufliciently to form such recesses by snitbe explained.
O is a plate cut from sheet-metal, in the form represented, and provided with the shoulders a a and lthe catches c c, formed by being struck up in a die, said recesses being open on the side toward the forward part of the heel, so as to allow the latch to enter the same to secure the heel to the shoe. This plate is securely attached` to the sole by nails, as is shown. D is a U-shaped piece of sheet-metal, Vwhich fits accurately within the plate O when the heel is placed l in position, and is formed from the piece punched out of the centre of the plate O, by cutting out its centre, and is firmly attached to the upper' surface of the heel, in such a position vthatwhen it is placed inside of the plate O, lthe heel shall be in the proper position 'on the shoe, andthe shoulder b b abutting against the shoulders a a, on the plate G, eiectually prevents the heel from being moved on the shoe;
E is a latch or bolt cut from sheet-metal, in the form shown, the outer ends of the several arms of which are depressed below the plane of the bodyof the same, so that they can pass under the plate D, by which it is held in place, andl serve as latches to secure the heel to the shoe, when said arms enter the catches c c.
d is a spring, which serves to keep-the latches in the catches c c.
In' constructing this heel, it becomes necessaryto -o o, to receive the heads of the nails, by which the plate-O is fastened to the shoe. This is done by embossing or stamping the recesses by crushing the grain vof the wood by thev use of a die, worked by a press,
the wood of which the heel is to'be made being held rmly during the operation.
What I claim as my invention, and wish to secureA by Letters Patent, is-
1. The detachable heel, made of wood, with thc grain o f the wood presented' endwise to the wearingsurface, andprovided with theconnecting-dcvices, and otherwise constructed as lerein described,kas a new manufacture. Y
2. The combination of the exterior plate C, which is attached to the sole, and the interiorplate D, which is attached to the heel, and ts closely into said cxterior plate, so that'both are in the same plane, and thevlatches or catches'E, for confining the two plates together in said plane, in a direction perpendicular to it, substantially as described. e 3. In the construction of detachable heels, as described, the making of the reoesses'in the heel to receive the connecting-devices by indenting the wood,
instead of cutting it out, substantially as described.
