To all whom t may concern:

Beit known that I, EDWIN LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnstown, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Heels for Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in detachable heels for boots and shoes, the object being to provide means whereby a lower or wear section of a heel can be readily attached to the section which is fast on the boot or shoe, the invention not only providing means for attaching the parts, but also for separating them, so that the wear-sections can be changed and sections of a different style or makeup secured to the fixed section of the heel.

The invention consists in the construction of the parts wheren is embodied a fixed section of a heel which has attached thereto a metal plate,with a plurality of keyhole slots or openings, said plate also having an aperture which is on a line with an open-ended slot, the tap or lift to which the plate is secured being cut out beneath the keyhole-slots and from a point beneath the centrally-located aperture to the end of the lift, so that a spring may be secured to the shoe to lie en tirely within the open-ended slot and project through the aperture a lug which is carried by the free end of the spring, the detachable heel-section being made up to provide a plate having headed projections for engagement with the keyhole-slots and a recess or aperture with which the lug on the spring engages to hold the parts locked one upon the other, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a side view, partly in section, of a boot-heel embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the section of the heel which is permanently attached to the boot or shoe. Fig. 3 is a pian view of the detachable section of the heel. Fig. A is a longitudinal sectional view of a modification of the lower section.

The lower lift or tap of the permanentlyattached section of the heel has out through the same openings a a and c, the latter being in the form of an open-ended slot, which extends from the front part of the lift to a point near its center. The lift is slightly cut out or recessed to receive a plate A, having marginal perforations through which are passed nails or fastening devices which hold the plate and lift securely to the shank or first lift of the shoe. It will be noted by this construction that the plate A is surrounded by a margin of leather, so that in use there will be no metal exposed.

A flat metal spring B, which is suitably curved, the same having at one end a perfo ration 'and at the other end an attached lug b, is secured to the shank or first lift so that its end will lie within the recess and the lug project through the opening c2. Normally the spring projects the lug beyond the plane of the plate, and by applying pressure to said spring the lug can be brought on a line with the face of the plate.

The detachable section of the heel when made up of several lifts of leather has fastened thereto a plate C', which is let into the upper lift and secured on a line with its edge by means of tacks or nails, and said plate has riveted or otherwise secured thereto headed studs c', which are adapted to be passed through the circular portion of the keyhole-slots, so that the head will lie beneath the walls, adjacent to the parallel parts thereof, and this plate C is provided with an aperture c2, within which the lug carried by the spring may enter to prevent longitudinal movement of one plate upon the other, and thus hold the two heel-sections in locked engagement. The leather rims which are bes yond the metal plates provide a tight and almost invisible joint.

When it is desired to separate the sections, the spring is depressed by inserting in the open-ended slot any suitable objecte-as a knife-blade, for instance-which will depress the spring and move the lug carried thereby out of engagement with the opening c2, and when this is done the headed pins may be moved toward the larger ends of the keyholeslot, and the sections may then be separated.

If a rubber heel is desired, it is molded about a wooden core D, and instead of riveting the studs to the plate C', I may use in lieu thereof flat-headed screws d, which pass IOO LIT

With my improved fastening means there are no exposed joints, the heel is not liable to become detached, and the same may be cheaply manufactured and readily applied.

I claim l. A. heel for boots and shoes comprising a section which ispermanently attached to the boot or shoe, said section consisting of a lift having therethrough an open-endedslot which extends from the front of the heel rearward, and openings or recesses, a spring secured to the shank to lie entirely within the slot said spring carrying at its free e'nd a downwardlyprojecting lug, a plate attached to the lift said plate having keyhole-slots in alinement with the openings or recesses and an aperture on a line with the lug through which a part of the lug may pass, in combination with a detachable heel-section having a plate with an aperture to receive the lug, and a plurality of headed .pins to engage the keyholeslots through the plate carried by the permanently-Y attached section substantially as shown.

2. In combination with a heel-section, of a boot or shoe comprising a permanently-attached lift having an open-ended slot a -which extends from a point near the center of the lift forward, recesses in the under side of the lift, a ilat spring B attached to the shank, a lug b on the free end of the spring the lug being located near the closed end of the slot, a plate A ot' less area than the permanentlyattached lift, the plate being secured to lie within the margin of the lift to which it is attached, keyhole-slots a and an aperture a2 through the plate, of a detachable heel-section to which is secured a plate of the same area as the plate with which it contacts and of less area than the lift to which it is secured said plate having an aperture c2 through the same, pins or screws having heads and shoulders which bear upon the plate and engage the detachable heel-section, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
