T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES, WILLIAM LAvERs, a subject of the King of England, residing at I-IalifaX, in the county of I-Ialifax, Province of Nova Scotia, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Shoe Heels of the Plate Type, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to shoe heels, particularly to detachable and interchangeable heels composed preferably partly of rubber or suitable cushioning resilient material, the objects being to provide such a heel which may be easily snapped into its proper position, to provide simple means for` locking the heel in such position, to provide easy means for detaching said heel and to simplify the construction and to reduce the cost of manufacture of such articles, while adding to their durability, all of which objects, among others, are accomplished by the construction, combination and `arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly set forth, described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings:

Figures 1 and 2 illustratein perspective respectively the permanent and detachable members of one form;

Figure 3 represents a Central longitudinal vertical section through a heel constructed according to Figures 1 and 2;

Figures 4 and 5 represent respectively perspective views 0f the plates used in the permanent and detachable members, slightly modied; and

Figures 6 and 7 represent similar views, the slots being reversed.

I am aware that the use of the key-slotted engagement or attachment plates for interchangeable heels is now known, and thisv will not be broadly claimed herein, but I have devised several improvements which, when used in combination with plates of this type, effect radical improvements in interchangeable heels.

In heels constructed according to this invention, one or more metallic plates 1 is provided with perforations 2 to allow the rubber of detachable member 11 to flow through the plate, thus it will be firmly embedded by the rubber passing through it and surrounding it on all sides and both faces, excepting where the rubber is omitted to leave access to the attaching orices, stops and run-over slot in the plate 1 for the cooperating elements carried by plate 7.

This plate 1 has a plurality of engagement oriicesB in it, which may be ofthe known key-hole type, or modifications thereofl suc-h as the wellvknown L or Tor other equivalent type, and have the corners or lips 4 struck up or inclined in every case to facilitate the easy entry of the head and shoulder 14 of the nails 5 or the part 6 into the narrow part of the particular orifice.

Incom'binationwith this plate 1 is a metallic or other suitable plate 7, whichv is secured superiicially t0 the permanent heel 8 by nails or brads 12, and which serves to keep the engagement members in their correct position, whether they be of the nail type, or headed pins or other type.

The plate 7 is invariably provided with burred or struck-up parts 10, preferably two or more in number, their purpose being to facilitate the correct positioning of thel plate 7 on the permanent member 8, or the outsole of the boot or shoe. The plate 7 for this purpose is placed in the recess 9 in the rubber of the separable member 11, in one face, which recess exactly ts the plate 7.

The detachable rubber member 11 with plate 7 in its recess 9 is then placed against the permanent member 8 or outsole and hammered slightly to cause it to ymark the member 8 with its struck-up parts or burs 10. The member 11 is then removed, plate 7 is lifted from the recess 9 and correctly placed and nailed in position on member 8 by nails or brads 12 driven through perforations for that purpose around its edge. After this the shouldered nails 5 are driven home through perforations 13 in plate 7, till their shoulders 14 rest against the plate 7 leaving their domed heads projecting and their shoulders 14 offering engagement surfaces.

An important feature of my invention is the over-run stop 24 offset or struck-up from the plate 7 which engages in a corresponding cooperating slot 25 in alignment in the plate 1 and prevents: the movable member from traveling too far in either direction,

also prevents the heads of the nails 5 or parts 6 from catching in the plate 1 when they parts are being separated, and limits the travel of the plate 1 against the shoulders 14 of pins or nails 5 or against the stems of parts 6 and insures against an undue strain. on the engagement means.

For the purpose of lightening the attachment as much as possible and reducing the cost of manufacture I may form the plates 1 and 7 with one or more oriiices or perforations and indentations 2 in all types: of these plates and in order to stillen the plates which might be weakened by the removal of surplus metal a bead or flange may be formed around these orifices and inclentations.v

Having thus described my invention, what I claimV as. new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A heel attaching element for detachable heels comprising a member having an entrance opening, the material at the throat entrance. of said opening being bent or de flected from its normal plane to guide into said opening a suitable headed engaging means.

2. A shoe heel having a permanent member, a base plate secured thereon, engage-A ment means projecting from said plate and projecting stops carried by said plate, in

combination with a detachable member and a plate embedded therein and -formed with slots to receive said engaging means, thematerial at the entrance of the throat of each slot being deflected from the normal plane to guide said enga-ging means thereinto, said plate being further provided with slots, one wall of each of said last named slots being` engaged by one of the aforesaid projecting stops on the aforesaid base plate, to limit the travel of the secondnamed plate 'rela tively to the irst named plate to prevent over-run and engagement of the second plate by the engaging means at the time of this disengagement.
