DETACH ABLE SHOE HEEL OF THE EMBEDDED-WASHER TYPE.
Application filed June 29, 1920. Serial 110.392372.
. useful Improvements in Detachable Shoe Heels of the Embedded-Washer Type, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shoe heels of the two member detachable type, particularly 1; to that type wherein attaching washersare embedded in the material of the removable member, .whichisgenerally of rubber, and cooperate with interlocking means carried by the permanent member. I
The objects of the invention are to provide such a type. of washer and cooperating interlocking means which will permit of ready and expeditious engagement and disengagement of .the members, to 'provide means for locking said members in normal 'or assembled position, to provide easy means for unlocklng sald members, to provide a' firmer grip of the washer by the material surrounding the same, to obtain the added resiliency 0r flexibility of the present type of washer heel while retaining the advantage of firmer grip and slidable engagement heretofore known in the'plate type of removable heel, and to simplify and otherwise improve the article and to reduce the cost of manufacture and increase the life of the article, all of which objects, among others, are accomplished by the construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly set forth, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 represents a vertical cross-section through a form wherein an integral piece is dished and bent over to protect the opening, forming a box to exclude the material of the detachable member during the molding operation.
Figure 2 represents a vertical cross-section through a further modification, wherein an integral part of the base of the washer is bent over to make a closed box, and
Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the heel with the washer of Fig. 2, applied.
The preferred form of the invention is of box-like or pocket construction, ,as in Figs. 1 .and 2, having a key-hole or other suitable opening" in one side to receive a headed or similar cooperating element and provided with laterally extending flanges or flange elements, the whole being adapted to be embedded in the plastic material of a shoe heel.
The two forms shown are of slightly different shape, one havingpronounced side walls while the other has the side walls merged more into the bottom.
In Figure 2 the integral metal flap 6 is illustrated as turned back fiat to close the bottom of the struck-up or box portion and prevents the entrance of the liquid material during the molding operation. structlon, as stated, prevents the entry of rubber during the molding/operation and thereby facilitates the entry of the heads 7 of the nails 8 into'their corresponding 00- operating slots 5.
The detachable member 9 a plurality of any type of these washers 1 embedded in it to an equal depth andwhich are provided with orifices or headed slots 5 of any suitable form permitting sliding interlocking engagement with the nails or' engaging projecting members 8 which are driven through the base plate 11 into the is provided with This? con- 7 permanent heel member 10 and kept in proper alignment by said baseplate 11 for engagement with the separate embedded I washers 1 in the detachable member 9.
It will be noted thatthe material of the washers 1 adjacent the corners of the headed slots 5 is struck-up or inwardlyinclined to form lips 12, to facilitate the easy engagement between the heads 13 of the nails 8' and the under face of the washers 1 adjacent the narrow parts or stems of the headed slots 5. The nails 8 are each formed with a shoulder 14 adapted to keep a predetermined spacing between its head 7 and the plate 11 which is provided with perforations15 only large enough to admit the shanks of said nails. The specific plate construction and the specific nail construction, also the struck-up or upwardly inclined lips 12, however, are not particularly claimed herein, but are mentioned, as being the most suitable method of construction and operation. i
Since many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention might be made, such embodiments being within the spirit and scope of the following claims, i i
intended that this specification shall be regarded as illustrativerather than limiting in detail.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V I
1. In combination with a detachable shoe heel of plastic material, an attaching element of box-like construction closed on all "sides and provided in one side With an openi ing element being embedded in the plastic material of said heel and by its box-like construction excluding from its interior the plastic material of said heel.
3, In combination with detachable shoe heel of plastic material, an attaching Washer comprisinga plate ofmetal' having one partdished or depressed out of its normal plane, one side of said washer being provided with an opening, said Washer being embedded in plastic material of said heel and by its box-like construction excluding from its interior the. plastic material of said heel.
'4 In combination With a detachable shoe heel of plastic material, an attaching Washer completely closed on all sides and comprising a plate of metal having one part dished or depressed out of its-normal plane, said element being embedded in the plastic material of said heel and by its box-like construction excluding from its interior the plastic material of said heel,
- 5. In combinationivit'h a detachable shoe heel of plastic material, an attaching washer completely closed on all sides and compris- I ing a plate of metal having one part dished or depressed out of its normal plane and having an opening in one side, and a peripheral flange extending from said washer and adapted to be embedded, said Washer being embedded the plastic material of said heel and by its boislike' construction excluding from its interior the plastic material of said heel.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my a name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
