ATENT LAMP-BURN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 487,020, dated November 29, 1892. Applicationiiled February l, 1892. Seria-l No. 419,906. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BARTLETT P. LUCE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of lampburners organized to hold a chimney having a cylindrical base. Heretofore burners organized to hold chimneys of this form have been provided with spring-arms adapted to bear with a yielding pressure on the surface of the chimney, in some cases the internal surface, but more generally the external surface, each arm being independent of the others and exerting a pressure on the chimney due only to its own resilience. In the course of time these independent arms lose their elasticity, and consequently do not grasp the chimney with sufficient firmness. Hence it often happens that the chimney is loosely held and falls accidentally from the burner.
My invention has for its object to enable a chimney having a cylindrical base to be clamped or grasped so that there will be no liability of its being so loosely held as to fall accidentally from the burner'.
To this end my invention consists in a lampburner having a chimney seat or support, diverging elastic arms projecting upwardly from said seat, a flexible or yielding chimneyclamp connected with said arms and consisting of a band having downturned arms connected with said seat, and means for compressing the clamp upon the said elastic arms, the clamp being adapted to hold the chimney above said seat and with a yielding pressure by its own elasticity and by the elasticity of those portions of the arms that project above the clamp, whereby expansion of the chimney by heat is permitted and the clamp is adapted to conform to variations in the size of chimneys, all of which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l` represents a side view of a burner provided with my improvement and showing a lamp-chimney in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the burner.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a represents the base or iiange of a lamp-burner, on which the lower end of the cylindrical lower portion or base of the chimney b rests.
The general construction of the burner has nothing to do with my invention, the same being confined to the means, presently described, for grasping and holding the chimney.
In carrying out my invention I secure to the base or flange a a clamp formed to embrace the cylindrical base b at a point above the lower end thereof and provided with means whereby it may be positively compressed or tightened upon said chimney-base, so as to firmly hold the same, as shown in the drawings. I employ a single jaw composed of a curved wire c,having its ends bent downwardly and constituting inclined arms c c', connected with the base or ange a. The jaw c bears on the outer side of the elastic arms f f, attached to and projecting upwardly from the base a, said arms being formed to bear upon the exterior of the chimney-base after the manner of the arms usually em ployed as the sole means of holding the chimney. It will be seen that by forcing a sleeve g upwardly upon the arms c c the jaw cwill be compressed and caused to force the arms f inwardly against the surface of the chimney. The jaw c in this case is supported at a point opposite the arms c c by means of a wire standard c2 rising from the base or flange a and attached at its upper end to the jaw c; or the jaw c maybe secured directly to the arms f.
I claim- A lamp-burner having a chimney seat or support a, diverging elastic arms projecting upwardly from said seat, a iexible or yielding chimney-clamp connected with said arms and consisting of aband having downturned arms connected with said seat, and means for compressing the clamp upon the said elastic arms, the clamp being adapted to hold the chimney above saidseat and with a yielding pressure .by itssown elasticity andfbythe elasticity ot'v those portions of the arms that project above the clamp, whereby expansion of the chimney by heat is permitted and the clamp is adapted to conform to variations in the size of chimneys, as set forth,
In testimony whereof I have signed my narne to this specification, in the presence 0E two subscribing Witnesses, this 36th day of ro January, A. D. 1892.
BARTLETT P. LUCE.
