I VW A w m .A PL
No. 577,840. Patented Mar. 2, 1897.
FRANCIS V. DAVIS, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO JOHN F. CI-IADWICK, OF SAME PLACE.
LAM P-BURN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,840, dated March 2, 1897.
Application filed February 10, 1896. Serial No. 578,693. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS V. DAVIs,a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same and representing a lamp-burner embodying my invention.
Figure 1 represents a side view of one of my improved lamp-burners with a lamp-chimney held upon the burner. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the lampburner. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a portion of the lamp-burner, with a part shown in sectional view representing the method of attaching the device for holding the lamp-chimney; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5 5, Fig. at.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the different figures.
My present invention relates to that class of lamp-burners adapted to burn keroseneoil or other products of petroleum and requiring a lamp-chimney; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described, and set forth in the subjoined claim.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes the base of the burner, provided with a screwthreaded section A, adapted to be screwed. into the screw-threaded collar upon the lamp. The base A is provided with arms A projecting radially from the edge of the base and sup porting upon their free ends a plate B, perforatedthroughout its central section B, with its edge forming a seat or gallery for the foot C of the lamp-chimney C. Surmounting the plate B is a dome D, extending over the upper end of a wick-tube D and provided with a slot D the above-mentioned parts being constructed like the corresponding parts of lampburners now in common use.
The device for retaining the lamp-chimney which embodies my present invention comprises a pair of elastic or yielding fingers E E, four pairs of these yielding fingers being arranged concentrically around the lampburner. The yielding fingers E E of each pair are held in contact at E when the lampchimney is removed, and their ends are bent in order to separate the tips of the fingers to form a triangular space E in order to receive the foot of the chimney. From the point of contact E the fingersE E diverge, the inner finger E passing through an opening 13 to its point of attachment with the burner, and the outer finger E is curved at E so as to be carried around and beneath the edge of the plate B to its point of attachment with the lamp-burner. I prefer to form the yielding fingers E E of a single piece of fiat elastic wire having a straight section E adapted to rest upon the upper surface of one of the arms A and be attached thereto by means of the lips F F, which are integral with the arm A and are bent over and upon the straight section E of the yielding fingers, thereby attaching them firmly to the upper side of the arm A The lamp chimney is applied to the burner by placing the foot C of the chimney in the triangular space E between the divergent tips of the yielding fingers and pressing the chimney downward upon the gallery B thereby separating the yielding fingers E E and allowing their tension to be applied to the outer and inner sides of a lamp-chimney and clamping the chimney between them.
Although I consider it preferable to form the elastic fingers E E from a single piece of elastic wire, they may be made of separate pieces, which may be attached to the lampburner in any suitable manner other than that shown and described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lamp-burner the combination of a base A provided with radially-projecting arms A a plate B, having a central section B, and a chimney-seat B in a lower plane than said central section and having openings B between said seat and said central section, a dome D attached to said plate at the edge of said central section, and yielding fingers E and E arranged in pairs and adapted to press against the outer and inner sides of the chimney, each pair of fingers being integral and attached to one of the arms A with the outer finger turned around the edge of said plate B and with the inner finger passing through one of the openings B substantially as described.
Dated the 4th day of February, 1896.
