No. 891,648. PATENTED JUNE 23, 1908. J. D. WESTMORELAND; LAMP BURNER.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 7, 1907.

JESSEHDAVIP E T ORELAND, or HURON, MISSISSIPPI.
LAMP-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed January 7, 1907. Serial No. 351,163.
Patented Tune 23, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE D. WESTMORE- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huron, in the county of Amite and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Burners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in lamp burners, especially with reference to means for holding the chimney in place, and it consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a lamp burner with improved means for holding the chimney in place against casual detachment and which while efficient in operation is yieldable and is prevented from bearing so tightly on the chimney as to injure or break the chimney, and which will also adapt itself to chimneys which vary slightly in size.
In the accompanying drawings ;-Figure 1 is partly an elevation and partly a vertical sectional view of a lamp burner provided with improved chimney holding means embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
The lamp burner here shown is of the ordinary construction, 2 being the base, 3 the gallery, 4 the cone and 5 the arms, which radiate from the base and support the gallery.
In the embodiment of my invention, I provide a non-expansible ring 6 and a suitable number of standards 7. Each of the standards is bent from a single piece of spring wire and comprises a lower portion 8, an upwardly-extending portion 9 with its free end bent outwardly to form a spring coil, one or more, 10 at the upper end of said vertical portion; The lower portionsS of said standards are here shown as secured to the radial arms 5 of the base of the burner. The said standards are provided with bends 11 to clear the outer edge of the gallery, and the vertical portions 9 of the standards extend upwardly from the gallery.
The ring 6 is disposed above the gallery and concentrically with reference to the cone and passes through eyes 12 which are formed in the upper portions of the standards 9 and constitute the inner terminals of the spring coils 10; hence the standards serve to support the said ring 6. The vertical portions of the standards extend inwardly from the said ring and are spaced therefrom and bear against the lower portion of the chimney, indicated at a. to hold the latter in place.
Owing to the fact that the standards are made of spring wire and the further fact that they are provided with the spring coils, it will be understood that while the said standards bear firmly by reason of their own resiliency, against the chimney, they are yieldable so that they are prevented from bearing so firmly against the chimney as to run the risk of breaking the same. Moreover, the said standards will yield when the chimney becomes expanded by the heat from the flame and hence adapt themselves to the expansion of the chimney and avoid applying undue stress thereto. Should a chimney of slightly less or greater size be used, the said standards will bear against the same, as will be understood.
The non-expansible ring 6, which connects the standards together, holds them in place and prevents them from becoming bent outwardy since stress ap lied to one of the standards such as wou d tend to bend the same outwardly would be distributed by the ring to all of the standards, so that each standard serves to brace all of the others.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-P atent, is
A lamp burner having chimney -holding means, comprising upwardly extending spring wire standards incurved intermediately of their ends and with their upper free ends bent outwardly and curved inwardly to form spring coils having terminal eyes, .a non-expansible brace ring of slightly larger diameter than the periphery of the incurved chimney-engaging portions of said standards, said ring extending through the eyes in said coils and arranged to engage a chimney base at points remote from its lower edge, and connectin said standards to provide for the yielding thereof under the expansive action 5 of the chimney and affording sufficient rigidity to hold the chimney against accidental displacement.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- JESSE DAVID WESTMORELAND.
