LAMP-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 6, 1906. Serial No. 299,849.
Patented June 12, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELVILLE O. AYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Biddeford, in the county of York and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specification giving a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a lamp-burner with an improved device for fastening the chimney securely in place from the inside and at the same time being adjustable to chimneys of different forms and lengths of base.
I am well aware that there are many devices for fastening chimneys from the inside by the use of spring-arms, levers, &c.; but it has been shown by practical use that they are all defective from the fact that they depend for their efficiency upon a uniform length of the bottom or straight part of the chimney. It is also shown that the chimneys found in the market vary in the length of said straight parts at the bottom. Conse quently a fastening device that will adapt itself to a certain form of chimney becomes inoperative when one with a longer or shorter base is substituted. Furthermore, it has been shown that the spring-arms of similar devices heretofore produced soon break off at the point of connection with the base of the burner, caused by the alternating tension at that point during the operation of putting the chimney on and off. Other devices of this class also require some peculiar or additional movement to place the chimney in position, thereby causing inconvenience and loss of time. In my invention I eliminate these objectionable features by the peculiar form of the spring-arms employed, as will hereinafter be described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters refer to like parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a burner in combination with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same with the chimney in place, showing the position of the spring-arms while engaged over the shoulder of a chimney with a long base. Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 2, but shows the position of spring-arms while engaged over the shoulder of a chimney with a short base.
In Fig. 1, A is the base of the burner B, the cap or dome. a a a a are spring-arms attached to said base and forming a part thereof, said arms having one or more spiral turns C near the point of attachment with said base, said arms extending to D, thence by short turns outward to E, preferably at obtuse angles, thence by short turns inward, preferably at acute angles, the extension of the said second turns terminating at points F, the diameter of the circle of which is less than the diameter of the straight part at the bottom of the chimney the burner is to carry.
The object of the loops or turns in the arms near their intersection with the base is to relieve the strain, and thereby prevent their breaking at that point. The peculiar form of the spring-ar'ms at D and E allows them to engage at the point E with the chimney upon some part of itsangular portion G, thereby adapting themselves to chimneys of'diiferent lengths of base. The extension of the arms inward to points considerably less than the diameter of the base of the chimney simplifies the operation of placing the chimney in position, making it convenient to do so, even in the dark.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 7 In a lamp-burner the combination with the same of spring-arms attached to the base and forming a part of said burner, said spring-arms having spiral turns near the point of attachment of said arms with said base, said arms extending vertically said vertical portions terminating in bends outward at obtuse angles, the extension of said bends terminating in bends inward at acute angles, the extension of said second bends terminating at points the diameter of the circle of which is less than the diameter of the base of the chimney that the burner is to carry, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MELVILLE O. AYER.
