NVENTOR 111: "ohms PETER! co. Mmauma. WASHINGTON, a c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMRY DAVIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED lNKSTAND-SUPPORT AND PEN-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,278, dated November 15,1892.
Application filed May 4,1892. $eria1No. 431,830- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMRY DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Inkstand-Support and Pen- Rack, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to appliarlces for penmens use; and its object is to provide a neat and ornamental device to support an inkstand and penholders and pencils. V
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which similar reference-numerals designate like parts in the several views.
Figure 1 isa perspective view of the device as applied to use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line .10 a; in Fig. 1, the inkstand being removed; and Fig. 3 is a broken sectional view showing one of the pen and pencil supports.
The body 10 of the device is preferably constructed of fabric such as felt, although other suitable fabric may be employed, and the marginal edges of the body may be scalloped, as shown, or have any other preferred ornamental configuration, or may be entirely plain, as preferred. In the transverse center of said body, slightly at the rear of its longitudinal center, is formed an opening 11, the margin of which, as shown, is formed with a succession of alternating angular recesses and projections, giving to said margin essentially a scalloped appearance. It will be understood, however, that I do not limit myself to the exact configuration shown of said opening, as the same may be plain, and circular, square, or of other configuration dependent upon the contour of the base of the inkstand in connection with which the body 10 is to be used; nor do I limit myself to a single opening in said body, as the body may have two or more openings when it is to be used with two or more inkstands. Said opening is closed on its underside by a strip or disk 12, of suitable fabric, as shown best in Fig. 2, said strip or disk being secured to the under side of the body 10 in any suitable manner, the opening being thus constituted a countersunk recess. The opening 11 is closed at its top, when the device is in use, by the inkstand 13, the body of which, being similar in its contour at its base with the margin of the opening, neatly fits therein, as will be understood by referring to Figs. 1 and 2. In longitudinal alignment in front of the opening 11 and at each side of the transverse center of the body 10 are secured the penholder-rests 14.- These rests, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, consist of a base 15 and upwardly and outwardly diverg ing arms 16,integral with the base, said rests being Y-shaped in general appearance. The rests are secured to the body 10 in any suitable manner, preferably by passing a screw 17 through a strengthening-strip 18 on the under side of said body and also through said body into the base 15 of the rest, as shown in Fig. 3.
The application and use of the device are so apparent from the drawings in the light of the foregoing description that I forbear to detailthe same.
1 Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A combined inkstand-support and penrack consisting of a fabric body having a countersunk recess therein and longitudinally-aligning penholder-rests in front of said recess, substantially as shown and described.
2. A combined inkstand-support and penrack consisting of a fabric body having an eccentrically-located countersunk opening therein, a strip or disk of fabric closing the under side of said opening, and vertical penholder-rests in front of said opening at each side 'of the transverse center of the fabric body, substantially as shown and described.
3. A combined inkstand-support and penrack consisting of a fabric body having scalloped edges, a countersunk opening eccentrically located in said body, a strip or disk of fabric closing the under side of said opening, and Y-shaped penholder-rests in f rout of said opening at each side of the transverse center of the fabric body, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two witnesses.
EMRY DAVIS. Witnesses:
