WILLIAM R. VANSANT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPLEMENT FOR WITHDRAWING PHOTOGRAPH-CARDS FROM ALBUM-LEAVES.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,170, dated November 15, 1892.
Application filed July 26,1892. Serial No. 441,273. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. VANSANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Implement for Use in Withdrawing Photographs or Cards from the Pockets of Albums, Frames, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
It is well known that most albums and many types of frames are provided with pockets adapted for the reception of pictures, cards, and the like and with slots through which the pictures or cards may be inserted into or withdrawn from the pockets. Hitherto in withdrawing the pictures or cards from the slots it frequently happened that the edge of the picture or card collided with the edgeor edges of the slot. Under these circumstances any efforts expended in endeavoring to force the picture or card through the slot resulted in the tearing of the marginal portions of the slot, and consequently in the disfigurement and destruction of the leaf of the album or mat of the frame.
The principal object of my present invention is to obviate the above-mentioned defects and disadvantages and to provide a simple, comparatively-inexpensive, and efficient implement adapted to afford means for removing photographs or cards from frames or albums without injury to the latter.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of an implement comprisingabody portion provided with a lip adapted forinsertion through the slot of a photograph or card holding pocket and beneath the photograph or card and with laterally extending guidewings and with a handle, the construction being such that the lip may be inserted beneath the card or photograph and guided by the wings into position for guiding the photograph or card through the slot and out of the pocket, as is hereinafter more fully explained.
The nature, scope, and characteristic features of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a top or plan view of an implement embodying features of my invention nor in which the marginal portion of the slot may be accidentally torn in removing the card or picture and at the left-hand side the manner in which such accidental tearing may be avoided by the employment of an imple-- ment embodying features of my invention;
and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a wellknown type of album, showing the housing or binding of the same provided with means for supporting my improved implement when the'latter is not in use.
In the drawings, a is a body of sheet metal, celluloid, or other preferred material provided with laterally-projecting guide-wings a, an operating-lip a and a handle a Y b is a compartment formed in the housing of an album I) and adaptedfor the reception of my improved implement when the latter is not in use.
0 is a leaf or frame provided with a pocket 0 for holding a card or photograph and with a slot 0 through which the same may be inserted into and withdrawn from the pocket.
In withdrawing a card or photograph cl by means of my improved implement the lip a is inserted through the slot 0 beneath the card or photograph 01 until the guide-wings a contact with the marginal portions of the slot. The photograph or card 61 may then be readily pushed out of the pocket in the usual manner, and the improved implement serves to guide the edge of the same through the slot 0 as shown at the left-hand side of Fig. 2, and in such manner that the leaf or mat is not torn or otherwise injured, as would occur if the implement were not employed, and is illustrated at the right-hand side of said figure.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my present invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described implement, comprising a body portion having a lip adapted for insertion through the slot of a photograph or card holding pocket and beneath the photograph or card and having laterally-extending guide-wings and a handle, the construc= tion being such that the lip may be inserted beneath the card or photograph and fitted by the wings into position for ;uidin,a, the photograph or card through the slot, for the pur- 5 poses set forth.
2. The herein-described implement, comprising a body portion having a lip adapted for insertion through the slot of a photograph or card holding pocket and beneath the pho- [O tograph or card and having a handle, the
constructionrbeing such that the lip may be inserted beneath the card or photograph into position for guiding the same through the slot, for the purposes set forth.
I testimony whereof I have hereunto signed I 5 my name in the presence of two witnesses. WVILLIAM R. VANSANT. Witnesses:
WM. WAGNER, J 1'., II. M. ToHUDY.
