LAM P-CHIMNEY PROTECTOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,564, dated October 18, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JONAS TOMLINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brinkley, in the county of Monroe and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Protectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention is a lamp-chimney protector; and it consists of the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.

The object of my invention is to producea protector to prevent bugs or other insects from dropping into the top of the chimney.

It is well known that with large lamp-chimneys-such as the Rochester lamp and all such large lamps of that kind-the power and heat that come from the chimney cause bugs and other insects that may be flying across the top of the chimney to fall in on the flame, which causes the chimney to smoke and then break.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a Rochester lamp with my protector suspended over the chimney. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the protector. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the protector.

Myinvention consists of a cylindrical wiregauze a, cone-shaped, its largest end being down and strengthened by a wire ring 17. Its upper end is covered by a solid piece of tin or other suitable metal 0, from the center of which extends a hook c for securing it to the bail d of the lamp. 0

In order to keep the protector from swinging from side to side and striking against the chimney, I extend from the stitfening-ring 1) three or more small adjustable wire braces (Z, and to the inner end of these wire braces is secured an adjustable wire ring e, its ends, however, not being united. This ring may be made smaller at will, as indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 3, so as to fit any-size lampchimney.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A lamp-chimney protector consisting of a cylinder of wire-gauze to, having at its bottom the strengthening wire ring 1), solid metal cap 0, hook 0', extending upwardly from the center of said cap, and bail cl, supporting said cap, substantially as shown and described.

2. A lamp-chimney protector consisting of a cylinder of wire-gauze (1, having at its bottom the strengthening wire ring 1), solid metal cap 0, hook 0, extending upwardly from the center of said cap, braces (1, having one end secured to the strengthening-ring I), adjustable ring e, working in the free ends of said braces, and bail 01, supporting the protector, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
