ALICE LA GUAYRA MAYO, OF HAMMOND, OREGON.
LANTERN.
Application led May 27, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALICE LA GUAYRA MAYO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, in the county of Clat- Sop, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to lanterns and particularly to devices of this character adapted for use in decorating Christmas trees and other decorative purposes.
rlhe object of the invention is to provide a lantern of the type named which will be safe `in use and which embodies an improved construction rendering same exceedingly simple and cheap to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lantern of the-type named which will permit different kinds of lights to be used in conjunction therewith.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully 'described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lantern constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2, a vertical section of same;
Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the lantern;
Fig. 4, a perspective view of one of the corner members of the lantern.
Referring to the dra-wings and particularly to Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive the improved lantern is shown as comprising a base 10 having an opening 11 therein surrounded by a depending flange 12 upon which is threaded a cap 13. This cap carries on its inner side a candle holder 14 for the pur- Speccation of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 100,421.
pose of supporting a candle 15 through the instrumentality of which the lantern is illuminated. It will however be understood that any suitable type of light can be mounted on the cap 13. When a candle is used as shown the cap serves to prevent the melted tallow or wax from falling from the lamp, the base 10 being provided with suitable openings to supply the necessary air for combustion. The base 10 is of square formation and rising from each corner thereof is a corner member 16. Each of these members is right angular in cross section so as to form arms 17 and 18. Extending laterally from the arms 17 and 18 are corresponding pane securing members 19. The corner members 16 are braced adjacent their upper ends by means of a brace wire 20 which mutually connects said corner members. Above the brace wire 2O the corner members 16 converge to a point at the top of the lantern and their ends are united by a suitable hangw ing or suspending element 21, the union between the corner members at the top being such that suitable escape for the products of combustion is provided. Each corner member just above the brace wire 20 is provided with arms 22 and 23 which extend in the same general direction as the tapering portion of the corner member and serve a purpose to be presently referred to.
The lantern is completed by the provision of lower panes 24 and upper panes 25. The lower panes 24 are detachably secured between the vertical portions of adjacent corner members by engaging the pane securing members 19 successively against the inner and outer sides of the related panes. The upper or inclined panes 25 are secured in place in a similar manner, the arms 22 and 23 supporting the lower portions of the panes 25 as clearly shown in the drawing.
What is claimed is A lantern comprising a base, corner members rising from the base and embodying pane securing means, the upper ends of the corner members converging to a point at the top of the lantern, a hanging element connecting the upper ends of the corner inem- Iatented Aug. 7, 1917.
In testimony whereof, I alx my signaw ture, 1n the presence of two wltnesses.

bers, lower panes secured between the parallel portions of the corner members, upper panes secured between the tapering portions of the corner members, and downwardly eX-' tending arms on the lower ends of the tapering portions of the corner members supporting the lower ends of the upper penes.
