Description
H. HIRSCHBERG. Decorative Lanterns.
Patented May 5,1874.
Nb.\5o,572.
UNITED SvTATEs PATENT OEEIcE.
HERMAN HIRSGHBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN DE'CRATIVE LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,572, dated May 5, 1874; application iled April 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit knownthat I, HERMAN HIRSGHBEEG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Lanterns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a side view of this in, 'ventiom Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters indicate correspondngparts.
This invention consists in a lantern composed of a pasteboard frame with open sides and a closed bottom, which supports a socket for the'reception of ataper or candle, the open sides ofthe pasteboard frame being closed by panes of gelatine, of various colors, in such a manner that, when the taper in the lantern is lighted, a beautiful effect is produced, while the lantern is cheap, light, and durable, and it to be suspended from Christmas-trees.
By making the sides or frame A .of pasteboard and removing from the same a central piece to create an opening, over which are placed the panesof gelatine, said panes are relieved. from all superimposed weight when standing on its bottom, or placed in various positions for transportation; hence all crushing or bending of the panes is avoided, which would occur if simply narrow top and bottom strips were used with hollow cylindrical body of gelatine, as in the decorating-lanterns now in use. Another object sought by the employment of pasteboard to form the sides of the lantern is that lightness and durability are secured, which is an important desideratum, and specially adapts the lantern for being suspended from. the branches of a Christmas-tree, and, further, if either of the panes are injured or destroyed, a new one can be inserted with ease and facility.
Itis evident that the socket for the candle can be dispensed with, and a lamp substituted therefor; but, from the nature and intent of my invention, I prefer to use the socket; and,
further, I would have it understood that lthe decorative lantern, as above described, is susL ceptible of being used without th e wire strength= ening-frame, as the pasteboard sides, with the closed bottom and corner-binding strips, will impart a considerable degree of rigidity and firmness.
In the upper part of the pasteboard frame of my lantern is secured a wire frame, to support and strengthen the paste-board frame, particularly against external pressure.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a frame which is made of pasteboard, with a closed bottom, a, and with open sides b. The bottom of my frame may be triangular, square, or polygonal, and the sides b are, by preference, made tapering, being widest at the top, so that when said sides are united to each other 'by corner-strips c, the frame assumes the shape of an inverted truncated pyramid. The apertures in the sides b of the frame A are closed by panes or sheets d of gelatine, which is made in various colors, plain or ornamented, and on the bottom a of said frame is secured a-socket, e for the reception of a taper or candle. In the upper part of the pasteboard frame A is secured a wire frame, f, which serves to strengthen the lantern against external pressure. Achain, g, serves to suspend the lantern from the boughs of a Christmas-tree, or from any other suitable support.
By these means a lantern is obtained which is cheap and durable, and which can be used with good advantage, for ornamenting Christmas-trees.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A decorative lantern, consisting of the pasteboard side pieces A, having openings b, transparent panes d, cornerbinding strips c, and closed bottom a, with or without the candlesocket, substantially as described, and adapted to be strengthened by the Wire frame f, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
HERMAN HIRSGHBERG.
