N.PEI'ERS. PHDTO-LITNOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. WELLINGTON, OF EAST LEXINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRAMES FOR HOLDING ORNAMENTAL OR FANCY POTTERY TILES FOR USE AS STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,335, dated February 18, 1879; application filed January 6, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHAs. A. WELLING- TON, of East Lexington, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Frames for Holding Ornamental or Fancy Pottery Tiles for Use as Stands, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus to hold vitreous or other tiles for stands, 850.; and consists of independent metallic corner pieces, having feet, combined with a cornerpiece holder, which connects the feet or corner pieces together after being placed upon the tile, substantially as hereinafter described, to keep them in place; also, in a tile-holder, independent socketed corner pieces, combined with separable edge pieces fitted to the corner pieces, and inside of which the tile is held.
The object of this invention is to furnish a cheap, durable, strong, and yet very artistic holder for tiles, the corner pieces being applied readily to tiles of various sizes, covering or inclosing the corners of the tiles, so that they cannot be broken; the tiles, mounted as thus specified, being designed for use as stands for coffee or tea pots, flowerpots, 850.
Figure 1 represents, in top view, a tile set in a tile-holder in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2, an under-side view thereof.
The tile a may be of any usual kind. The corner pieces I), as will be evident from the drawings, are made to embrace or receive within them the corners of the tile, and also the ends of the edge pieces 0, which will preferably be made of wood, either in natural or fancy colors, the edge pieces bearing against the side edges of the tile between the corner pieces.
All the corner pieces, preferably of castbrass, and provided with feet 00, as well as the edge pieces, are separable each from the other and by adapting the length of the edge pieces to the size of the tile, the corner pieces and the said edge pieces will hold a tile of the desired size.
The corner pieces below the tile are embraced above their feet as by means ofa corner-piece holder, d, shown as composed of a wire, connected or soldered together at 0, where its ends meet, the holder being shown as bent at f, to throw the main part of the holder-welt under the tile.
Each corner piece has projecting from its under side a rest, 3, which may be bent by pliers, to bear upon the under side of the tile at its corners, to set it up well into the upper portion of the corner piece, and hold it firmly, thus adapting the corner pieces to tiles of difi'erent thicknesses.
I claim- 1. The combination, with a tile, of independent removable tile-holders, socketed to receive and protect the corners of the tile, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the independent corner pieces I), of the corner-piece holder, applied to the corner pieces, to hold them in position at the corners of the tile, substantially as described.
3. The independent corner pieces and cornenpiece holder, to hold them in'place when applied to the tile, combined with independent edge pieces, interposed between the corner pieces and the edges of the tile, substantially as described.
4. The corner pieces, shaped to embrace and protect the tile at its corners above and below, provided with adjustable rests 3, to operate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHAS. A. WELLINGTON.
Witnesses:
