1 LANTERN N0. 530,626: V "Patented Dec. 11, 1894..
Witnesses:
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE'ROWLAND, OF OONSHOHOCKEN, PENNSYLVANIA. v
LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,626, dated December 11, 1894. Application filed September-26,1894. SerialNo|524,212. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Conshohocken, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to lanterns and has for its object the production of alight, cheap and simple illuminating lamp particularly designed for use in connection with Christmas trees.
The invention will first be described in connectionwith the drawing and then particularly pointed out in the claims.
The drawing illustrates a side elevation of my improved lamp, partly in section to more clearly illustrate some of the details. 4
The base A having feet 0., is preferably of such material as will contain oil if desired,
and to the neck is secured a metal top having an opening provided with an internally screw-threaded ring a adapted to receive and hold a candle. In place of a candle, a small ordinary lamp burner may be screwed into,
the ring a as indicated by the dotted lines. Secured to the metal top and projecting upward ly therefrom are several spring fingers 0. having outwardly bowed portions ct intermediate their ends and adapted to engage an external head on the lowerend of the chimney or globe B. The upper flaring end of the chimney has fitted to it a light metal cap 0 of a diameter greater than that of the top'of the chimney throughout the length or height of said cap, so that said chimney may be moved up into said cap when the lamp or candle is to be lighted. The lower part of the cap is slitted vertically to .form spring fingers c the lower ends of which extend under the flaring top or upper head of the chimney. The top of the cap is provided with a hook c swiveled in the center thereof, so that the lantern may be suspended as from the branch of a Christmas tree and freely turn.
Light wire rods cl, forming a guard about the globe or chimney, have their ends passed through suitable openings in theends of the fingers a and c, and are provided with shoul= ders or offsets each side of the fingers to prevent movement therethrough in either direction. These wires (1 are bowed and form the only connection between the base and cap, except that afforded by the chimney. Therefore when the chimney is lifted from the fingers a? to get access to the candle or lamp I burner, if the movement of the chimney into the cap '0 and to the upper end of the latter, is insufiicient to obtain such access, the wires will yield and permit the cap to be farther removed from the base so that the chimney can be-lifted somewhat farther.
Air enters between the fingers a and the products of combustion and heated air escape between the fingers c.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is-'- 1. A lantern comprising in its construction a base and cap each having a plurality of spring fingers, wires connecting the fingers of the base with those of the top, and a chimney or globe normally held by the base fingers but adapted to be lifted therefrom and moved upward into the cap, substantially as described.
2. A lantern comprising in its construction the base having spring fingers 0, provided with outwardly bowediportions a the chimney or globe B having an annular head at its lower end adapted to enter the bowed portionsof the fingers a and having another bead atits upper end, the cylindrical cap H having spring fingers c and adapted to permit the passage of the upper end of the chimney to the top of the cap, a hook c swiveled in the top of said-cap, and the wires d having their ends passed through holes in the spring fingers and provided with shoulders or offsets each side of the latter, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
