Description

P. J. KNORPP, JR.
LANTERN.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 30. 1915.
- Patented July 11, 1916.
further object being to provide PHILIP J. Knonrr, no, 01? NEW YORK, N. Y.
LANTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 30, 1915. Serial No. 58,886.
The present invention relates to an im- I proved toy lantern, particularly to be used for decorating purposes, and for festive 0ccasions and holidays such as Halloween, Christmas and the like, an object of this invention being to provide such a device' which will provide a source of illumination as well as being a decorative feature, and a such a debe folded flat for shipping and storing purposes, which will be safe to use and which may be manufactured and sold at a very small expense.
With these and other objects in view, my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, and will hereinafter be more fully described with reference thereto and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings,
vice which may Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device and being the design of a Christmas tree; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same open; Fig. 3 is an end view thereof open; Fig. 4 is a front view in closed position; Fig. 5 is an end view in closed position; Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the possibility of embodying different attractive designs in my invention.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, my invention consists of front and rear portions 10 and 11, suitably decorated in the illustration with a Christmas tree'and brick fire place. Perforations 12 are provided in the tree to represent the lights of the candles forming part of the trimming of the tree. The two portions are secured together by means of connecting pieces 11 and 15 glued at the ends to the interior of the said portions 10 and 11 and scored centrally so that they may be folded outwardly when the lantern is collapsed. At the base of the members 10 and 11 and centrally thereof, there is provided a supporting member 16, secured interiorly at each side and scored centrally so that the same folds inwardly upon collapsing of the lantern. This supporting member 16 is of a less width than the end pieces 11 and 15, so that when the lantern is open, the end pieces will not be straightened out, but will remain bent, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Supported on the member 16, there is provided a platform 18 hinged at one side and provided centrally thereon with a candle holder 19 in which a candle 20 is placed. A space, it will be noticed, is left between the ends of the member 18 and the bent connecting pieces 14 and 15, which permits the fingers to be inserted to pull the member 18 into fiat position, should for any reason the same not flatten outin opening. This member 18 will upon opening of the lantern drop into supporting position upon the member 16 and hold the portions 10 and 11 in extended position. In folding, the supporting member 16 automatically forces the member 18 inwardly and into flat position against the sides 10 and 11. A supporting or hanging wire 21 is provided, connecting the upper ends of the members 10 and 11.
The form shown in Fig. 6 is exactly similar in construction to the form shown in Fig. 1, with the exception that a pumpkin head design is substituted for the Christmas tree, and openings 22 are provided therein to represent eyes, nose and mouth. Other appropriate designs, it will be understood, may be substituted as desired.
My improved invention provides a very simple and inexpensive device, and at the same time one that is decorative and appropriate for the occasions intended. The folding be shipped in very small space, and also allows the convenient storing of the same after having been used, for future occasions.
I have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory forms of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim 1. A device of the character described comprising two opposite side walls having ornamental exterior designs, a candle supporting member hinged to one of said side walls, a supporting device on the other side member for holding said candle supporting member in lowered position, and folding connections between said side walls which permit them to move directly toward each PatentedJuly 11,1916. 7
other in collapsing and directly apart in setting up.
2. In a device of the character described, side walls, connecting end pieces secured between the side walls and adapted to be folded outwardly, a connecting base piece secured between the side walls and adapted to be folded inwardly, and a candle-supporting member hinged to one of said side pieces, and adapted to be folded inwardly with the said base piece.
3. In a device of the character described, side walls, connecting end pieces secured between the side walls and adapted to be folded outwardly, a connecting base piece secured between the side walls and adapted to be folded inwardly, and a candle-supporting member hinged to one of said side pieces, and adapted to be folded inwardly with the said base piece, the said base piece being of shorter Width than the said end piece, to prevent complete straightening thereof in open position, thereby forming a space between the said end pieces and the candle-supporting member to permit the fingers to be inserted therein.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
