UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS Il?.l NASH, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
Application filed December 28, 1914.
candles of differentlengths and in which the candle, when in use, is entirely concealed eX- cept the burning tip thereof; a further ob- -ject being to provide a candlestick of the class specified in which the candle is always supported at the same height by a spring placed within the stick and which will be ornamental, strong and durable and in which the stick is composed of a single tube formed integrally with or permanently connected with the base and the top portion of which is screw-threaded and adapted to receive a threaded sleeve provided with a shade holder; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a candlestick constructed, as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in thefollowing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a side view of my improved candlestick complete and showing a shade holder with the shade indicated in dotted lines; Fig. 2 a central vertical section through the candlestick including the shade holder; and, Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing only a part of the device and showing the same on an enlarged scale.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a candlestick a, comprising a base a2, a main candlestick portion a3 connected with the base and a supplemental candlestick portion a* formed integrally with the main candlestick portion a3. lThe main candlestick portion a3 is reduced in size at a5 and the supplemental candlestick portion a4 is of less transverse dimension than the main candlestick portion, and placed thereon is a removable sleeve made of porcelain or other Specification of Letters Patent.

earthy substance and also made to resemble a candle.
The height of the main candlestick portion Z3 is preferably about twice the height `of the supplemental candlestick portion a4,
or that part thereof on which the sleeve o is mounted, and 'said supplemental candlestick portion a4 is projected above the sleeve Z; to form a tubular extension a6 which is screw-threadedand adapted to receive a correspondingly threaded tubular cap c provided at its lower end with an annular bead 02 and at its upper end with an inwardly directed iiange c3, and the cap c is provided with a shade holder CZ, consisting of vertical side arms Z2 having inwardly set lowerl end portions Z3 which are permanently connected with the cap c, and the arms @Z2 of the shade holder are provided at the top thereof with an annular cap Z4 having an outwardly and downwardly directed socket member (Z5, and the cap Z4 is adapted to support a shade e indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l. The shade holder in itself, however, forms no part of my invention and is of a form wellknown in this class of devices.
At the top 'of the main candlestick portion as is secured the usual cup-shaped collar f, in the bottom of which, the removable sleeve Z) fits when in position, and a candlestick constructed in this manner produces a neat and finished appearance as shown in Fig. 1. Within the candlestick is placed a long spiral spring g which is supported by a detachable plug ZL placed in the bottom of the main portion a3 of the candlestick, or any suitable device may be employed for supporting the spring g, the object in making said support removable or detachable being to provide means whereby the candlestick may be thoroughly cleaned when desired. The spring g is provided at the top thereof with a beveled cap g2 which, when the candle z is not in position is supported by said spring on a level with, or above the threaded part 0,6 of the top portion L4-of the stick, and in placing the candle in position the bottom thereof is placed on the cap g2 of the spring g, and said spring is forced downwardly after which the shade holder cap c is screwed into position, as shown in Fig. 2, and the device is ready for use, and as the candle is consumed the spring g forces it upwardly until the cap g2 of said spring fits beneath the flange 03 of the shade cap 0 and in this Way the entire candle may be consumed.
From the foregoing description and shovving, it will be understood that candles of different lengths, or of any desired length, may be used in my improved Candlestick and the spring g may be of any desired length and strength, and springs of diEerent lengths may be employed, if desired.
In the construction shown, the outer diameter of the top portion a4 of the candlestick and the removable sleeve Z; is slightly less than the outer diameter of the bottom portion a3 of the Candlestick, or is of the same dimensions as the inner diameter of said bottom portion of the Candlestick, and this also adds to the artistic features of the complete Candlestick, the sleeve Z) being thus made to almost exactly represent a candle inserted into the bottom portion as of the stick.
Although, I prefer1 to make the length of the sleeve Z) approximately half the length of the bot-tom portion ci of the Candlestick, as herein shown and described, my invention is not limited to these exact details, and changes in and modifications of the various features of construction herein shown and described may be made, Within the scope of the appended claims, Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A candle holder, comprising a base adapted to -rest on a table or other support and having a tubular stick contracted at a predetermined point above the base and formed into a supplemental top portion of less diameter than the bottom portion, said stick being provided at the top of the bottom portion With an annular collar and the top portion being provided With a removable sleeve of less length than said top portion and which fits centrally in said collar, and the top portion of the stick being provided above said sleeve vvith a detachable tubular cap having a shade holder and provided at its top With an inwardly directed flange.
2. A candle holder, comprising a base adapted to rest on a table or other support and having a tubular stick contracted at a predetermined point above the base and formed into a supplemental top portion of less diameter than the bottom portion, said stick being provided at the top of the bottom portion with an annular collar and the top portion being provided With a removable sleeve of less length than said top portion and which fits centrally in said collar, and the top portion of the stick being provided above said sleeve With a detachable tubular cap having a shade holder and provided at its top with an inwardly directed flange, and a spiral spring placed in said stick and provided at the top thereof With a cap adapted to support a candle placed in said stick. Y
3. A candle holder, comprising a base adapted to rest on a table or other support and having a tubular stick contracted at a predetermined point above the base and formed into a supplemental top portion of less diameter than the bottom portion, said stick being provided at the top of the bottom portion With an annular collar and the top portion being provided With a removable sleeve of less length than said top portion and Which fits centrally in said collar and is of less diameter than the bottom portion of the stick and the top portion of the stick being provided above said sleeve With a detachable tubular cap having a shade holder and provided at its top with an inwardly directed ange.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 26th day of December 1914-.
