CANDLE-LANTERN.

. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,770, dated October 4, 1887.

Application filed March 30, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SERAN O. DRUMHELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sunbury, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle-Lanterns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany-- ing drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The special object is to improve that class of light lanterns which are used about stables and outbuildings, so that they may be carried, cleaned, and manipulated with more convenience.

Figure l of the drawings is an elevation in perspective, showing my improved lantern; Fig. 2, a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a detail View, of the cap and deflector. Fig. 4 is a detail view in sectional elevation of -a modification of my lantern, showing the upper part of the hollow stand having the groove 1) to receive the drip and the spring to hold the candle steadily against the inside of. the neck or socket.

In the drawings, A represents a hollow sheet-metal stand having the air-inlet a. and the air-outlets a near the top, which is made tubular to receive a candle, B. Through this tube or neck a is a side hole, c through which passes a pin, a, so as to hold the candle at any point or elevation to which it may be adjusted.

G is a collar, made of sheet metal, either plane or concave on the upper side, so as to catch the drippings from the candle; is fitted snugly about the neck a and may be easily removed and quickly cleaned, while it prevents the drippings from finding their way to other parts of the lantern. I may use the pin a to hold the candle in the neck or socket a 5 but I preferably employ the spring b, which is made fast at the bottom to the outside of the Serial No. $232,960. (No model.)

D is a lamp-chimney of blown glass, which fits at the bottom about the stand annulus a and rests upon a shoulder, a. Thus itis very firmly supported and not liable to be easily displaced.

E is a wire, which is doubled and the two ends passed down through the holes'a a] in the stand, under which they are made fast by soldering or in any other approved manner.

The arms 6 e are made to extend above the top of the chimney, and the connecting-bend e is made to form a bridge, on which I place a non-conducting wooden handle, 6. By placing one or two fingers around this handle the heat from the wire will not reach the hand.

In order to still further guard the hand from the heat from the candle-flame, I place a cap, F, over the top of the chimney and make in it a cross-slot, f. Over this I place a deflector, G, through a hole, 9, of which, near one end, passes one of the arms 6, while the other end is notched at g. This deflector may be placed higher or lower above the cap, and will be held by the spring of the arms e c. This turns off the products of combustion as they rise from the candle, and prevents them from burning the hand.

Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the stand A, chimney D, and wire handle E, of the chimney-cap F, having slot f, and the adjustable deflector G, having-the hole 9 and notch g, as and for the purpose set forth.
