L. GOODMAN.
JACKET, &c. No. 483,686. 7 Patented Oct 4, 1892.-
WITNESSES: llw NTOI? W i BY ATTORNEYS.

UNITED Srarns PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS GOODMAN, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
JACKET, &,o.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,686, dated October 4, 1892.
Application filed February 4:; 1&92. Serial No. 420,281. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.
Be it known that I, LOUIs GOODMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the'following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved garment in which the sleeves are so connected with the main or body portion of the garment that the cutting under the arms which is common in tightly-fitting garments is entirely obviated and an easy and comfortable fit obtained, so that the garment is more convenient to the wearer, while at the same time the connection of the sleeves with the body of the garment is made stronger and more durabio; and the invention consists of a garment the front and back of which are cut in one piece and provided with tongues projecting into the armholes, in combination with sleeves, the under sections of which are provided with overlapping extensions that are stitched across the tongue portions of the body, so that a two-ply connection is obtained at the armpits and thereby a nicer and more comfortable fit obtained under the arms.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved garment. Fig. 2 is an inside view of the undensleeve section, showing the same turned inside out, so as to show its connection with the body of Fig. 3 is an inside view of part of the garment, showing the connection of the sleeve with the body. Fig. 4C is the pattern from which the body is made, and Fig. 5 is a pattern of the under-sleeve section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body, 13 the under-sleeve section, and C the upper-sleeve section, of my improved garment. The body A is out according to the pattern shown in Fig. 4, in which the front and back are made of one piece, suitable gores d being cut out at the sides, so as to fit the garments along the sides of the chest and hips by forming seams along the sides, which extend nearly up to the armpits. The body is further out with tongues a a, which extend into the armpits and which are stitched to the upper and under sleeve sections, as shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3. The under-sleeve section is provided at the upper end with an extension I) 1), into which a slit is cut at or near the center, so that the extension can be drawn over and stitched over the tongue (I, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, whereby a two-ply connection of the sleeve with the body of the garment under the armpits is obtained.
The advantages of my improved garment are, in the first place, that as there is no seam under the armpit the disagreeable cutting of the sleeve under the arm, which is common in garments, is entirely obviated and a comfortable and easy fit obtained; secondly, that a garment of greater strength and elasticity is obtained, as it gives the heretofore weakest part of the garment a double strength by the two-ply connection formed by the overlapping of the tongue of the body and the extensionfiaps of the under-sleeve section.
My improved cut of garment is especially adapted for office-jackets, smoking-jackets, sporting-jackets, or any other garments in which an easy and comfortable fit of the sleeves under the arms is especially desired.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A garment composed of a body the front and back of which are cut in one piece, provided at each armhole with outwardly-extend ing tongues, to the edges of which are connected, respectively, the upper and lower sleeve portions, the lower sleeve portion being provided with flaps at their upper ends which overlap said tongues and are secured to the body portion of the garment.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses:
LOUIS GOODMAN.
