ELMIRA H. HARPHAM, OF ST. LOUIS, MICHIGAN.
COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,058, dated. September 20, 1892.
Applicaton filed May 9, 1892. Seria1 No. 432,282. (IIo model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMIRA H. HARPHAM, of St. Louis, in the county of Gratiot and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvernent in Combs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact deseription.
This invention eonsists in a back eomb for ladies use of nove1 construetion, the same eombining in the one artiele a comb fox holding the back hair of the head neat and in position when done up, and an attaehed neek- 0011110 1201 keeping up neatly the neck hairs or locks; a1s0, combining a hair dart 01 pin f01 passage through the hair and aiding to 11016. the combined eomb in place, the whole forming a nsefu1 and ornamental article f01 1adies head-wear.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speeification, in whieh similar letters of reference indeate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 represents an outside face view of my improved connb with dart applied and showing by dotted 1ines the neck-eomb as thrown down or 0pened; and. Fig. 2 is a Vertical section, in part upon a larger saaie, on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, omitting the dart 01 p1n.
A indieates the main or back comb proper, having opposite side arms 01 legs 12 and 0 and teeth c 0 on the under side of its top to engage with the hair and to prevent the eomb from eoming down 01. off when applied to the head. B is the neek-comb, provded with a 10W of small teeth d d 011 the upper margin of it, the same serving t0 catch and keep up neatly the neck hairs 01" locks. The neeke0n1b B, although eombined with 01 attached to the man 01 back 0on1b proper A, is separately adjustable 01 movable up 01 down from the latten Thus said eomb B is pivoted, as at 0, to the 10wer end of one of the side arms 01 1egs b, so that t aan he let down, as shown by dotted 1ines in Fig. 1, when 01 before first applying the main eonnb, and afterward be raised 01 shut to take up the neek hair 01 loeks and made to engage at its free 01 opposite end with the 10wer end of the opposite side leg b of the main comb and be held s0 engaged by a spring-controlled catch O as shown by f1111 lines in Figs. 1 and 2, from whieh it may readily be released when required to open 01 let down the neckcomb.
D is the dart 01 pin, arranged t0 pass through loops f f 011 the side arms 01 1egs b b, between the combs A and B. This dart is inserted after the back hair is done up, and aids te hold the eombined comb in p1aee as well as to form a head ornament.
When required to remove the eombined eornb from the head, the dartD is drawn out 01 removed, the neek-comb B let down 01 opened, and the main eornb A drawn up 01 out of the hai1.
Both eonnbs A and B, as also the dart D, may be made of any suitab1e material or naaterials and of any size and desired shape 01 ornamental configuration.
By means of this combined 001111) the neckhair may be kept up smooth and nice and a back-0011110 be provided for holding up the back hair in position; also, a dart f01 further securing the whole in p1ace and forming an ornamental appendage. When the head-hair and neckhair are done up With this combined comb, it w11 be impossible fo1 them to come down until the wearer of the comb re quires to take down hei back hair.
Having thus fu11y deseribed my invention, I claim as new and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent- 1. The eombination, in the one artiele, of a 1adys back-hair comb and an attaehed raising and lowering neck-hair 0011113,
2. The combination, in the one article, of a 1adys back-hair comb, an attaehed raisng and lowering neckhair comb, and a removable dart 01 pin adapted t0 engage transverse1y with the back-hair eomb between the 1atter and the neck-hair eomb.
3. The eombnation of a ladys baek-hair eon1b provded with downwardly-projecting teeth on its upper portion and a ower neckhai1 comb having upwardly-projecting teeth and downwarly and upwardly opening and elosing pivoted eonnection wth the main 01 back-bah eomb.
4:. The eombination of a ladys baek-hair con1b provded with downwardy-projecting teeth on its upper portion, a lower neek-hai1 eomb having npwardly-projecting teeth and downwardly and upwardly opening and. clos- IOO ng pivoted connection with the main 0r backhair comb, and a removable dart 01 pin adap ed te engage transversely with the opposte sides of the man 01 back-hair comb between 5 the latter and the neck-hair comb.
5. The combinaton of the main 01 backhar comb A, having upper downwardly-projecting teeth 0 and sde arms or legs b b, the lower neck-hair comb B, having upwardly- 1o projeeting teeth d d, pvoted at its one end,
as at 0, to the one leg b below and closng 01 engagng at its opposte 01 free end with the 10wer portion of the other leg 12, and a springcatch t0 hold the same in engagement, substantally as shown and descrbed.
