CURLING OR CRIMPING IRON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 482,501, dated September 13, 1892.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK S. SLEEPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curling or Crimping Irons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hair curlers and crimpers; and it consists, first, of two semicylindrical curling or crimping portions of metal provided with handles and pivoted or crossed at or near their center, the said semicylindrical portions being adapted when in contact to lie one within the other; and it consists, secondly, in providing the semicylindrical tubes or crimping portions with closed ends to prevent the hair being cut in the operation of curling or crimping the same.

In the drawing the figure is a perspective View of my improved curler and crimper in an open position and showing very clearly the closed ends.

A in the drawing represents the curler or orimper, which comprises two pivoted or crossed members B B, each provided at one end with a semicylindrical curling or crimping tube 1) b, the tubes when the curling-iron is closed occupying positions one within the other, and the pivoted or crossed members are provided at their other ends with suitable handles 0, to be grasped and manipulated by the hand of the operator. The semicylindrical curling or crimping tubes are preferably closed at their outer ends, as shown at D, for the purpose, as before stated, of preventing the hair from being cut or injured in the operation of curling or crimping, as would be the case if such end guards were left off. By forming the curling and crimping iron with two semicylindrical tubes of about the same thickness, instead of with one solid curlingbar and a partial cylindrical clamping-piece, they can be much more rapidly and thoroughly heated. It will also be observed that by forming the curling and crimping portions in the form of two semicylindrical tubes of about the same diameter a very positive purchase can be secured on the hair all around and a very deep curl or crimp can be made in the same. The smaller semicylindrical curling-tube b may be weighted, as at d, at its pivot end to give it a preponderating weight forward of its pivot, and thus insure its automatically closing into the other semicylindrical portion and remaining therein. It will be seen that the parts of the handle to which the semicylindrical portions are attached are shaped to cause the said semicylindrical portions to be parallel when in contact, while the handles in rear of the pivot may be divergent from one another to any extent required.

By forming the curling and crimping portions with closed ends the use of the iron is greatly facilitated. If a ladys hair was already arranged or done up, this iron could be pushed into the front hair to make a wave here and there, as desired, without taking down or undoing all her hair, while if the ends were not closed they would catch or pull the hair, so that all the hair would have to be taken down. It will also be observed that by closing the ends of the curling or crimping portions the flame overwhich the ironisheatcd will be arrested and kept from shooting out at the ends, thereby largely inclosin g the flame and retaining a large amount of heat.

What I claim as my invention is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a combined hair curler and crimper comprising two arms, each provided with a semicylindrical curling or crimping portion, one of which approximately entirely closes into the other and which when in contact are parallel, whereby the hair can be either curled or crimped and a single curl made at one operation, substantially as described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a combined hair curler and crimper comprising two arrps, each provided with a single curling or crimping portion, one of which approximately entirely closes into the other and which when in contact are parallel, the said curling or crimping portions having closed guard ends, whereby the hair can be curled or crimped and a single curl made at one operation and the hair waved without the liability of the curling or crimping portion catching into the hair, substantially as described.

3. As a new article of manufacture, a combined hair curler and crimper comprising two arms, each provided with a single curling or crimping portion, one of which approximately entirely closes into the other and which when in contact are parallel, the said curling or crimping portions having closed guard ends and weighted, whereby the hair can be curled or crimped by one operation and the hair waved without liability of the curling or
