2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed April 26, 1955 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS WITNESS Patented Aug. 25, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE HAIR CURLER John Lini, Trenton, N. J.
Application April 26, 1935, Serial No. 18,448
2 Claims. (Cl. 13236) The invention relates to a hair curler and more especiallypto a device for accommodating curlers of different types so that when the hair of a person is wrapped about these curlers the same will be subjected to moisture and heat for effecting permanence to the curls as made by the curlers, the device being of novel construction in its entirety and is readily and easily handled in the use thereof for curling purposes.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the human hair can be permanently waved without liability of injury to the scalp or the head of a person in the use of such device.
is A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and efficacious in its operation, readily and easily handled, avoiding discomfort to a wearer during the'hair curling period, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture. 7
"With these and other objects in View, the in vention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings: 30 Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows. Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows. Figure 5 is a perspective view of the closure base for the device. 40 Figure 6 is a perspective view partly in section of a slight modification of the device.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the closure base for the modified form of device.
Figure 8 is a vertical transverse sectional view 45 through a further modification of the device.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, particu- 50 larly Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, the device constituting the present invention comprises a twopart shell preferably made from sheet metal including the sections Ill and I, respectively, these being swingingly connected to each other by a s5 pivot pintle l2 engaged in pintle sleeves it} cut and bent from the said parts I0 and H and arranged in matched relation to each other so that the parts Ill and H can be swung to opened and closed positions. Built upon these parts It and H are upwardly divergent handles l4 having 5 therebetween a tensioning spring l5 which urges the said handles apart from each other for the automatic closing of the parts Ill and II. The outer faces of the handles M are grooved or kurled at l6 so that the fingers of the hand of an operator of the device will' not slip when contacting therewith and thus assuring a positive and firm grip upon the handles for operating the device.
Formed internally of the shell and unitary with the parts Ill and II are lining walls these being spaced from the walls constituting the parts ill and H to provide a steam or vapor space or chamber l8 in said parts of the shell, the walls l! for a distance of their uppermost 20 portions being provided with perforations l9 to allow steam or vapor to pass from the spaces or chambers l8 into the center portion of said shell for a purpose presently described.
Steam or vapor is conveyed to the spaces or chambers l8 through feed tubes 20, these being suitably joined with the shell and open into the said spaces or chambers for supplying steam or vapor thereto.
Removably fitted between the parts l0 and II of the shell is a combined closure base and clamp comprising a pair of flat strip-like jaws 2| these being rounded at their ends congruous with the conformation of the open bottom of the shell and. at the outer marginal edges of said jaws 2| are provided channels or grooves 22 for accommodating the edges of the parts l0 and H for the interfitting of the jaws therewith. These jaws are carried by a hinge 23 which is located at one end of the base while at the other end is a pivoted latch keeper 24 so that the jaws can be latched in closed relation to each other. The jaws at the meeting edges, that is to say the innermost straight edges thereof, have fitted therewith flexible facing pieces 25 for contact with the hair of a human being when such hair is to be waved or curled by the device.
Fork-like supports or bearings 26 for removably accommodating a. curling roller or core 21 are arranged with the jaws 2|, the journal ends 28 of this roller or core being accommodated in the bearings 26 so that the roller 21 when engaged in these bearings and the jaws 2| are fitted with the parts In and II and closed. The hair as curled upon the roller 21 will be subjected to the steam or vapor let into the spaces or chambers l8 and thence distributed through the perforations l9 throughout the center portion of said shell so that the curled hair will be treated for permanency of the curl therein.
The jaws 2| are fitted on their outer faces with rest pads 29 preferably made from felt. These pads are adapted for contact with the scalp of a person during the hair curling period in the use of the device to avoid any injury to the scalp.
In Figures 6 and 7 of the drawings there is shown a slight modification of the invention, wherein the shell 30 which is similarly constructed to the shell hereinbefore described has fitted with its open bottom the solid releasable base 3|,
it being of oval formation correspondingly to the open bottom of the shell 30 and marginally has formed therein the groove or channel 32 for interfitting with the parts of said shell 30 when these parts are in closed relation to each other. This base 3| carries a bracket or bearing 33 for a curling roll 34, it being extended through a suitable clearance 35 provided in one end of the shell exteriorly thereof for exposing portions of the strands of the curled hair 36 without said shell and these portions of the strands of hair 36 in their twisted condition are engaged by grippers 31 of conventional kind for the holding of the twist in the hair. The clearance 35 is regulated by a shutter or gate 38 pivoted at 39 to one of the parts of the shell 30.
In Figure 8 of the drawings there is shown a still further modification of the invention, wherein in lieu of a base the opening side of the shell 40 carries flexible strips 4|, these being adapted for contact with each other when the shell is completely closed and also engage with the hair when the parts of the shell are clamped therewith so as to avoid damage to the hair from the pressure of the parts of the shell.
The curling mediums when within the shell will be subjected to moisture .and heat so that the hair curled thereon will be treated for permanence in the curl of the same.
The parts It] and II have fitted therewith fluid discharge outlets 42 so that the heated fluid fed to the chambers or spaces l8 can be delivered therefrom and in this fashion a circulation of the fiuid is had in the said chambers or spaces in the parts l0 and II of the shell.
Condensation taking place in the chambers or spaces l8 within the parts I0 and II of the shell will be trapped in the lower portions of these chambers or spaces so that there is no possibility of such condensation coming in contact with the scalp of a person having the device in operation for hair curling purposes.
From the foregoing the construction and man- 7 ner of use of the device should be clearly understood and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted. It is understood, of course, that changes, variations and modifications may be made in the structures as fall properly within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What is claimed is:
l. A device of the character described comprising a two-part shell having linings in its parts to provide chambers therein and also having perforations in said linings, grips on the parts, means active upon the grips to hold the parts in closed relation to each other, a base interfitted with and between said parts and having means for supporting a curling roll for the confinement thereof between the parts and means for feeding a heated fiuid to the chambers.
2. A device of the character described comprising a two-part shell having linings in its parts to provide chambers therein and also having perforations in said linings, grips on the parts, means actve upon the grips to hold the parts in closed relation to each other, a base interfitted with and between said parts and having means for supporting a curling roll for the confinement thereof between the parts, means for feeding a heated fluid to the chambers and protective pads carried by said base.
