To all whom it may concern..- i Be it known that 1-, RICHARD W. WELDoN,

a citizen of the United State, residing at Rockford, in the county of \Vinnebago and 1 State of Illinois, have invented certain new l and usefulImprovements in Hair Curlers and z Crimpers, of which the following is a specification. 1

My invention relates to improvements in that class of hair crimpers and curlers in which a tube is used in connection with a semi-tube to form the curling and crimping device proper, the requisite heat for curling or crimping being furnished by a heated metal 3 rod inserted into the above-mentioned tube. l

The objects of my improvements are to so unite the tube, semi-tube, and heating-iron with a handle that the curler and crimper can be easily operated with one hand, and the heating-iron can be readily inserted into and withdrawn from the tube.

In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents an isometrical view of the curler and crimper. t Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal central section 1 of the same through the dotted line a: of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a detached sectional view of i the collar, knob, cap, and ferrule.

A represents a handle, of wood or other suitable material, having a tubular opening; A, through the longitudinal center thereof.

D represents a jaw of the curler and crimper, consisting, respectively, of the semitubular part D, flat part D and portion D which connects the parts of the jaw just enu- The portion D of the jaw D lies at right anglesalmost any other angle would answer equally wellwith the other parts of the jaw, and is provided with an elongated slot, D", of sufficient width to admit the tubular jaw B, and long enough to allow the same a motion of three-fourths of an inch, or thereabout, in the direction of the length of the slot. The jaw D is hinge-jointed to the terrule of the combined cap and ferruleA at D.

E represents a curved spring for closing the jaws B D of the curler and crimper.

E represents a rivet securing the sprin E to the flat portion D of the jaw D. The upper end, E ,-of the springE is free, and emerges slightly from the slot D- whenever the jaws B D are pressed apart. The heating-iron (I should be withdrawn from the tubular jaw B whenever it is to be heated for use.

To use my invention most advantageousl as a curler, I grasp the handle A in one hand and with the other catch the end of the lock to be curled, press the jaws B D apart, and insert the free end of the lock of hair between them and let them close upon the hair. I then grasp the swivel-knob B with the thumb and forefinger of the hand that has just released the lock of hair and hold it lirmlv, while with the other hand I revolve the curler toward me.

To crimp a lock of hair I proceed in the same manner as above directed, except that the loci; is drawn taut in ahorizontal position and the crimpcr moved backward and forward to and from me, alternately and rapidlv opening and closing the jaws thereof while the This operation is to be continued until the lock is crimped as little or as much as the operator desires.
