HAiR-CURLING IMPLEMENT.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN LOUIS To- QUET, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Westport, Fairfield county, Connecticut, have invented certain Improvements in Hair-Curling Implements, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to construct a hair-curling implement in" which all the working parts will be inclosed and not liable to catch the hair, and which can be operated in any position, as fully described hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved haircurling implement grasped by the hand and opened to receive a lock of hair. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of my improved haircurling implement. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the iron on which the hair is curled. Fig. 4 is a detached perspective view of the clamp. Fig. 5 is an end view, and Fig. 6 is a view of a modification, of a portion of my invention.

In hair-curling implements of the usual construction one or more of the working parts have been exposed, so that strands of hair would be entangled with the implement and make it practicallyuseless, and, further, the operating-handle would be in one set position, so that if a person intended curling her own hair the operating-handle, if released, would leave the curling-clamp in such an awkward position that the operator could not reach it, and the implement would have to be turned to a favorable position and in many cases the hair would be uncurled; but by the use of the implement which I will now proceed to describe the hair can be curled on any portion of the head, no matter in what position the clamp may be, and, further, the working parts of the implement being all inclosed it is impossible for the hair to become entangled in the implement.

Referring to the drawings, A is the curlingiron, which in the present instance is at its outer end solid, while at its rear half it is in the form of a tube, as shown in Fig. 3. This tube extends into the handle B, and is secured thereto by a pin b. Pivoted to the curlingiron at d is the clamp D, having an arm or eX- tension (1', which is connected by a link 6 to a cylindrical plunger e, which slides in the tubular portion of the iron A. The iron is cut away at a, as shown at Fig. 3, to allow for the working of the plunger and link 6. The plunger 6 is connected to an operating-sleeve E by a pin f, which passes through a slot or notch e in the plunger, Fig. 2, so that any movement of the sleeve will be imparted to the plunger (2, and consequently through the medium of the link to the clamp D. A metallic sleeve g is secured to the sleeve E in any suitable manner and covers the lower end of the clamp D, preventing the hair frombecoining entangled with the portions below the pivot d.

In the tubular iron A, below the plunger 6, is a spring G, which tends to force the plunger and its sleeve E in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2, which in turn closes the clamp; but by resting the handle B in the palm of the hand and grasping the sleeve E with the fingers the clamp can be readily opened by the movement of the sleeve in a direction opposite to that indicated by the arrow.

To curl the hair with this implement, the iron is first heated in any suitable manner, and the implement is grasped in the hand in a certain position with the clamp raised, as shown in Fig. 1, and a strand of hair is placed between the clamp and the iron. The clamp is then released and the implement is turned so as to wind the hair around the iron, and when the hair is sufficiently set the iron is removed by raising the clamp and releasing the hair. It will be seen, therefore, that no matter in what position the implement may be the hair can be readily released, as the releasingsleeve encircles the curling-iron and therefore can be grasped in any position.

It will be understood that the plunger 6 and sleeve E may be secured together in other ways than that shown and described without departing from my invention, and that the sleeve E may be so formed as to expand above and cover the working parts in place of the metallic sleeve g, as shown; but I prefer in all cases to use the metallic sleeve, as it adds materially to the appearance as well as to the strength of the implement.

Instead of placing the spring in the tubular iron A, as shown in Fig. 2, the spring may bear directly upon the sleeve E, being placed around the tubular iron A, as shown in Fig. 6, although I prefer to construct the implement in accordance with Fig. 2.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in a hair-curling implement, of the iron and its handle, the clamp, and an operating-sleeve which encircles the curling-iron and on the movement of which the clamp can be raised or lowered, substantially as described.

9. The combination, in a hair-curling implement, of the iron, the clamp pivoted thereto and having an arm connected to a plunger, a sleeve connected to the plunger, and a spring moving said plunger and tending to close the clamp, substantially as described.

3. The combination of the handle and the curling-iron extending into the handle with a pivoted clamp, a sliding sleeve connected to the clamp to open it, and a spring aeting to close the clamp, substantially as described.

4:. A curling implement having an iron with a pivoted clamp and a sleeve and a handle inclosing the workin parts for moving the clamp.

5. The combination, in a hair-curling implenient, of the iron hollow at its rear part and its handle with a clamp pivoted to the iron, a plunger in the hollow part of the iron, and a spring acting on said plunger to close the clamp, and a sleeve by which the clamp is opened and which incloses the Working parts of the implement, substantially as described.
