UNITED STATES PATENT CEETCE.
CHARLES C. ASIAIBAUGH, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO WALTER BUHL t CO., OF SAME PLACE.
NIUFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,432, dated September 13, 1892. Application filed May 14, 1892. Serial No. 433.017. (No specimens.)
To all whom t may concern;
.Be it known that l, CHARLES C. ASHBAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of l/Vayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain nev.T and useful Improvement in Muffs; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willen able othersskilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to muffs, and has for its object the production of a muff inv which the external covering of the body part of the muff is extended beyond the hand-openings and the ends of the rnuf to form a tubular wristlet adapted to be folded into the interior of the muff or unfolded to extend the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the muff in perspective with the wristlets extended. Fig. 2 shows a section of the muff with the wristlets folded in. Fig. 3 shows a section with the Wristlet extended.
A represents the body of the inuff, which is made in the usual form and of the usual Inaterial-usually some kind of fur-with a lining of silk or other fabric and with a filling or stuffing of cotton or mingled cotton and other material. The outer covering ct extends over the ends of the muff at a' and to the opening B, where it usually joins the inner covering c. At the seam where the outer covering a joins the lining C, I attach a wristlet D, of which one face is covered with the same material as that used for the outer covering for the inuif.
This face CZ forms the inner wall of the tubular wristlet D when the wristlet is folded into the muff in the position shown inl Fig. 2, and forms the outer wall or covering of the same tubular wristlet when the wristlet is extended in the position shown in Fig. l. The other Wall of the wristletD is finished with a lining e of the saine or similar material to the lining c. Thus the muff and Wristlet when used in the extended form of Fig. 1 presents a homogeneous pleasing appearance, and when the Wristlet is folded in the structure presents the appearance of an ordinary mutt. Of' course if it be desired lo make the outer'covering of different materials it may be done, as myinvention does notconsist in the material used, but in the extensible wristlet adapted to be folded in out of sight or extended for the protection of the wrists of the wearer.
As a new article of manufacture, a muff comprising a filling and an external covering for the body thereof and the ends, the said covering being ext-ended beyond the edges of the hand-openings in the ends of the muff to form a tubular wristlet adapted to be folded inwardly into the interior of the muff and re- Versibly unfolded to extend the sain e, snbstanA tially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
