SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 481,931, dated September 6, 1892.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES WILLSON DE- LANEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hammond, in the county of Lake 5 and State of Indiana, have invented certain IQ art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in I 5 toys for children of that character in which a marble, sphere, or other object is shot or projected from a tube or barrel by a springactuated plunger.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is acen- Fig. 3 is a plan view with the plate or cover removed.

In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a rectangular or other shaped box provided upon its top or upper side with a spindle 2, journaled therein and provided with ahead 3. Fixed to this spindle is a disk 4, having an apertu re 5 therein,a corresponding hole 6 being formed in the top of the box, with which said aperture is adapted to register 5 with the spindle and disk when the same are rotated. Secured to the top of the box is an annular housing, consisting of a disk 7, having a depending peripheral flange 8. This housing covers or conceals the disk t and is provided with a hole or aperture 9, which is also adapted to register with the aperture 5. Secured to the under side of the top of the box is a short tube 10, which communicates at its upper end with hole 6, and at its lower end is connected and communicates with an inclined barrel 12, passing through the ends of the box. This barrel is provided with a spring-actuated plunger 13. In addition to the hole 9, the housing is also providedwith an aperture 14, and the disk 4 is provided upon its upper face with letters, numbers, or other characters, which will be displayed at said aperture 14 as the disk is rotated. The box may also be provided with a sliding drawer for containing targets, which may be in the form of animals, birds, or other objects.

The operation is as follows: A marble or other projectile is placed in the aperture 9 and the disk 4 rotated until the hole5 therein comes into coincidence therewith, when the marble will be carried around until the hole 5 registers with hole 6, when it will fall into tube 10 and from thence pass to barrel, where it will rest upon the end or head 15 of the plunger. By pulling the plunger outward and then letting go the marble will be shot or projected from the barrel.

The characters upon the disk will serve to familiarize children with the alphabet and digits, thus aiding them in learning the same.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a toy, the combination, with the box having apertures therein and the inclined barrel provided with a spring-actuated plunger, of the rotatable disk having an aperture therein adapted to register with the aperture in the box, the housing having a corresponding aperture, and the tube communicating with the barrel and the aperture in the box, substantially as described.
