SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters.Patent No. 426,113, dated April 22, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, JOHN CONTRELL, Jr., a citizen of theUnited States, residingat Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in mechanical toys designed for the amusement of children; and it consists, essentially, of a board provided. with. a fort having arranged thereon a rotating gun in connection with a figure secured. to the top of a lid of a box having concealed therein a second figure actuated by a spring and adapted to jump out of the box when the lid is thrown back when the figure on the lid has been struck with a ball fired from the gun on the fort.

The invention consists, further, in certain details of construction and novel combinations of parts, which will behereina'fter more fully described, and finally pointed out in the clauses of the claim.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which similar reference-letters are employed to indicate like parts in each of the several views.

In said drawings, A designates the main frame upon which the toy is mounted. Upon one end of the frame A is arranged the base or fort B, which is cylindrical and hollow. IVithin this base is placed a post Z), to the up per end of which is secured the grooved block or table I). Said post fits into a pedestalblock U, arranged within the bottom of the base, as shown, the said. pedestal thereby serving to hold the post I) in an upright position and allowing the gun-carrying block or table Z) to rotate about its vertical axis in a horizontal plane. The block b is preferably inclined in the direction toward the figure shown on the right of the drawing, represented in Fig. 1, and is provided wit-h a groove b in the top thereof, in which is placed the gun or cannon c. This gun is of the ordinary construction, being provided with a rod or stem 0, arranged within the bore of the gun and provided with a piston or plate 0. and projecting at the opposite end through the gun,

- and having a finger-piece c, by means of which the rod is drawn back to enable the firing of the ball (Z from the gun. The rod 0, when re 'leased by the operator, is caused to return to its normal position by an elastic band 0', se-

cured thereto and to the gun in any wellknown manner; or I may employ an ordinary spiral spring arranged around the stem, if desirable. Upon the opposite end of the frame A is arranged a box E, provided with a lid 0, and firmly secured on the top of said lid is a figure F, designating that of a man. Pressed down within the box E underneath the closed lid is a second figure G, dressed in a long gown g, and concealed thcrebeneath is a spiral spring g. A hook c is secured by means of an eye 6 to the side of the box E, said hook being adapted to engage with a pin 6 on the lid when closed, thereby causing the retention of the jack in the box.

-When it is desired to operate the toy, the ball (Z is placed in the gun in front of the pis ton, and the rod 0 is drawn back by the fingenpieee to the position indicated in Fig. 3. After taking aim for the figure F on the box E the finger-piece is let go and the elastic band 0 causes the rod 0' to return and the ejection of the ball (Z from the gun. lVhen the aim has been a perfect one, the hall from the gun will strike the figure upon the box E and cause the disengagement of the hook e from its pin e As soon as the hook has been released from its holding-pins the spring g in the doll G causes the lid 6 to assume the position indicated in Fig. 2, and the spring-actuated doll is at liberty to jump from the interior of the box E.

If desirable, a string q maybe attached to a block on the lower end of the spring g, said string also being fastened within the box, as shown in Fig. 2.

The balls used. in connection with this toy may be of Wood or rubber or of any other suitable material, and instead of representing a human being on the lid of the box I may place thereon a figure representing an animal.

In a toy, the combination of a base 13, having a rotating table thereon, a gun on said table in a groove therein, and means for operating said gun and causing the ejection of a ball therefrom, a box having a lid and a figure thereon means for holding said lid in its closed position until released when said figure has been hit by a ball from the gun, and a second and spring-actuated figure concealed in said box, which is released therefrom when the lid has been thrown back, as and for the purposes set forth.

In a toy, the combination of a base B, having a rotating table thereon, said table being inclined and'provided with a groove across the top thereof, a gun on said table in said groove therein and means for operating said gun and causing the ejection of a ball therefrom, and a box having a lid and a figure thereon, and means for holding said lid in its closed position until released when said figure has been hit by a ball from the gun,

and a second and spring-actuated figure con-- cealed in said box, which is released therefrom when the lid has been thrown back, and a string secured to said spring-actuated fig ure and to the box, as and for the purposes set forth.

4. In a toy, a gun and operating means therefor by means of which said gun is caused to present a ball, in combination with a box having a lidand a figure thereon adapted to be hit by the ball from the gun, and a figure concealed Within said box and caused to appear above the box when the lid has been thrown back, as set forth.
