H. L. MARBAGH.
DART.
Patented A 3, 1883.
Fly. 7.
WITNE ATTORNEYS SSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN L. MARBACII, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,236, dated April 3, 1883.
(No model vl To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN L. MARBACH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Toy Darts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and ex act description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of my toy dart, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
This invention has relation to toy darts ;and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the pointed wire havinga spiral or corrugated portion near its point and an eye or loop at its rear end, the ribbons or fliers attached to the latter, and the weight-stop placed on the wire about the spiral or corrugated portion a short distance from the point, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a designates a short piece of wire, which is pointed at the end b, and at the other end is formed with an eye or loop, 0. Near its point the wire a is bent in spiral or corrugated form, as indicated at d, and upon this portion of the wire is cast or screwed a weight or ball, 6, of metal, rubber, wood, or other suitable material, metal being preferred. The wire passes centrally through the weight or ball, so that the weight of the latter is evenly distributed around the wire. The corrugated or spiral portion (1 serves to keep the ball in position on the wire. To the loop or eye 0, at the rear end I of the wire, are fastened one or more fliers, 0,
consisting of strips of cloth, ribbons, or feathers.
The dartis intended to be thrownata wooden target. In throwing the dart it is not necessary to hold it point foremost. The ball is grasped and thrown, and being the heaviest part of the dart, and near its point, will, when aided by the retarding influence of the fliers at the rear end, cause the dart to rectify its position in its passage through the air, so that it will strike the target with its point, which will embed itself in the target and hold the dart in place until it is removed. In order that the dart shall have time to right itself,
the target should he placed at a distance of twenty or thirty feet. The ball being placed near the point will serve as a stop to prevent the point lrom entering deepl5 into any substance.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The toy dart consisting of the pointed wire, having a spiral or corrugated portion near its point and an eye or loop at its rear end, the ribbons or fliers attached to the latter, and the weight stop or ball placed on the wire about the spiral or corrugated portion near the point, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above 1 have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HERMANN Ii. MARBAUH.
