WILLIAM S. ROOT, OF ALLIANCE, OHIO.
TOY TARGET.
aoaoae.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. Roor, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Targets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in toy targets.
One object of the invention is to provide a toy target having a series of apertures and a plug adapted to be inserted in the apertures and to be shot out by a suitable projectile on an elastic cord attached to the target.
Another object is to provide a target of this character which may be employed as an educational device by' providing each of the apertures therein with a letter of the alphabet or other character, and in arranging the letters to spell certain words, the plug being successively placed in and shot out of the apertures of the consecutive letters of the word, thus spelling the latter.
Vith these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction. combinatlon and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective View of one form of my improved toy target. Fig. 2, is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3, is a vertical sectional View showing the plug in place in full lines and in shot out position in dotted lines.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1, denotes the stationary back plate of the target on which is formed a handle 2, whereby the target may be held in the hand or otherwise supported. In the back plate 1, at any suitable position, but preferably adjacent to the upper portion thereof and in line with the handle 2, is formed an aperture 3. Revolubly mounted on a screw eye or other suitable connection t, arranged in the center of the back plate 1, is the face plate 5, of the target, said plate being in the form of a flat disk having formed therein adjacent to its outer edge an annular series of apertures 6, which, when the disk or plate 5, is revolved, are adapted to be consecutively brought opposite to or in alinement Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 25, 1909.
Patented Aug. 2, 1910.
Serial No. 524,401.
with the aperture 3, in the back plate 1, of the target.
Adapted to be inserted through the alined apertures 3 and 6 of the back and front plates of the target is a tapered plug 7, which is preferably secured to the rear side of the back plate by a cord or other flexible connection 8. The plug 7, is adapted to be inserted through the aperture 3, in the back plate and through one of the apertures 6, in the front plate, which is brought opposite to or in alinement with the aperture 3. When in this position, the smaller end of the plug 7, will project a slight distance beyond the outer side of the face plate 5, as shown.
Secured by an elastic cord 9, to the eyebolt 4:, of the target, is a suitable projectile 10, which may be of any suitable construction and is here shown in the form of elliptical shaped body. By drawing the proj ectile 10, back and thus stretching the cord 9, the projectile, when released, will spring back toward the target and if aimed or directed correctly will strike the projecting end of the plug 7, and drive the same out of the apertures in the back and front plates of the target.
\Vhen the target is provided with letters, numerals, or similar characters, the same may be employed for educational purposes and will form an efficient medium for teaching young children the alphabet or numerals and the spelling of simple words. If desired, the device may also be employed as an advertising medium and may in that event contain any suitable advertising matter or designs.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a toy target, a back plate having formed therein an aperture, a front or face plate revolubly mounted on said back plate, said face plate having formed therein a series of apertures adapted to be brought into alinement with the aperture in said back plate, a plug adapted to be inserted through the alined apertures in the front and back plates, a projectile adapted to be shot at said plug, and an elastic connection between said projectile and the target.
2. In a toy target, a back plate having formed therein an aperture, a handle arranged on said back plate a front plate having formed therein an annular series of apertures, means to pivotally connect said front plate with said back plate, whereby the former may be turned to bring the apertures therein into alineinent with the aperture in the back plate, a tapered plug adapted to be engaged with said alined apertures, a flexible connection between said plug and target, a projectile adapted to be shot at said plug, and an elastic connection between said projectile and the outer face of the target.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- IIQSSGS.
WILLIAM S. ROOT.
