Description

(No Model.)
E. F. ATKINSON. METALLIC EDGE PROTECTOR.
No. 480,241. Patented Aug. 9, 1892.
lllllllllll i l' Tr UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS F. ATKINSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO HENRY OGDEN, OF SAME PLACE.
METALLIC EDG E-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming` part of Letters Patent No. 480,241, dated August 9, 1892. Appiicaaon fnedAprn 2,1891. serial No. ssmeof (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS F. ATKINSON, a citizen of Great Britain, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of NewYork, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Edge- Protectors, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to edge-protectors for Io paper boxes, packages, &c.; and the object of the invention is to provide a device which shall be simple in construction, economicalin use, and at the same time shall prevent the wrapping or binding twine or cord from cutting or damaging the edges of the boX when applied thereto, and which will at the same time prevent the twine or cord from slipping from its position after having once been tied to place; and with these ends in view it ccnzo sists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of lthe edge-protector, showing a part of the binding twine or cord. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken in the direction of the arrow on the line of; a; in Fig. l, showing the open clip B; and Fig. 3 is a viewin perspective of a parcel or package suitably secured for 3o transportation and having my protector applied thereto.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings,A designates aportion of the angularly-bent ed ge-protector for boxes and packages, the holding-clip B and binding twine or cord O being also illustrated in Fig. 2.
D D are depressions or recesses which permit the twine to pass between the clip B and the opposing edges b b of the opening in the protector. 4o
To place the twine or cord in position, a c
loose loop is formed in the twine or cord, and said loop is inserted or placed in the bottoni portion B of the clip. The cord is first placed in from the upper or outer surface of the clip, and is then moved laterally along under the clip B. The end of the clip B, as shown at b2, is of sufficient length to preventthe twine from slipping out after it has been inserted to place and has been drawn taut. 5o
From the foregoing illustration and description it will be seen that by placing the improved edge protector on aboX or package to be carried and inserting the twine asA described that the twine may be pulled tightly without injury to the box or package.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a 6o metallic edge-protector for boxes and packages, comprising' the rectangularly-bent edge portion adapted to tit the edge of the box or package, provided with the clip B and having the opening E, the bottom portions of the clip having depressions D D to receive the twine, and the cord or twine O, passed through the seat or sleeve in the clip B, substantially as specified.
Signed at New York, in the county of New 7o York and State of New York, this 31st day of March, A. D. 1891.
FRANCIS F. ATKINSON.
