WARDROBE, CHIFFQNIER, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,078, dated July 19, 1892.
Application filed December 28, 1891. Serial No. 416,312. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS W. PUROELL and JOHN B. CRAIG, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, lWIissouri, have jointly invented a new and useful Wardrobe and Ohiffonier or Book-Case and Bed Combined; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings hereto annexed and made part of this specification, and in which Figure I is a front elevation of our improved article of furniture, showing the front half thereof as a book-case. Fig. II is an end elevation of the same, showing the drawers of a chiffonier opening to the side when closed on the bed. Fig. III is a front perspective view of our improved combined bed, showing a mattress of woven wire, showing a chiffonier on one side and a wardrobe on the other. Fig. IV is a sectional plan view of the top, showing the means employed for operating the sliding fronts therein. Fig. V is a similar view of the base, showing the bed-plate and slot with the ball roller-bearings for manipulating the sliding parts. Fig. VI is a plan View of the sliding front parts- Fig. VII is a sectional view of the top, showing the guideplates; and. Fig. VIII, a detail section of the ball roller-supports on line 8 8, Fig. VII.
Similar letters and figures have reference to similar parts throughout the several views.
Our invention relates to that class of articles of household furniture wherein the greatest variety of useful and necessary adjuncts of a living-room is sought combined with a bed in such a manner as to make the most from a limited house-room space; and the objects herein sought by us in this construction and arrangement are, first, to provide the articles referred to in a consolidated, compact, and convenient form; second, to combine them so that all the parts are available for their respective uses, whether as wardrobe, bookcase, and chiffonier, with the bed, or whether they be opened or closed therewith and not be so in appearance merely; third, to reduce the frictional bearing of the moving parts and so adjust them that they can be readily and with ease moved into any desired posi tion; fourth, to provide means for opening and closing the drawers of the chiifonier from either front, side, or rear, and, fifth, provide a receptacle for pillows and bedclothes.
We attain the foregoing objects by the arrangement and combination of parts illustrated by the drawings, in which A represents the receptacle or box-frame for the bed Y; B, the right front sliding quarter arranged as a wardrobe; B, the left front sliding quarter arranged as a chiffonier, having the drawers 1) opening to the front and rear when the article is opened out and opening to the side when closed.
D D are hollow extension-cases hinged to and forming the ends of the base 0. These also serve as supports for the moving fronts B B. They are further provided with doors and serve the purpose of holders for pillows and bedclothes when the bed is not in use.
E is the top, containing the top slotted plate H, having the straight slots 6 e to receive and guide the upper portion of the sliding fronts B B by the pin projections 72. h.
The bottoms of the moving fronts B B are respectively provided with the pin projection 71 i and the ball-bearing apparatus G G G G, (see Fig. 6,) the latter being placed around the pin i and receive the weight of the fronts B B.
The plates I I are set in the base 0 and extend in section over the end parts D D, the slots 2' i being on a line perpendicular to the slots 6' e in the top plate H, so that when the parts are constructed and ready to be put to- 8 5 gether the frame A, containing the bed Y in position, and the base-extensions D D opened, the parts B B are set on the base 0, with the pins 2' 2T placed in their respective slots M and supported free upon the ball-bearings G 0 G G G. Then the top plate E is adjusted in its place, the top pins h h in the top slots e e, and the top screwed down to the frame A, and the construction and arrangement are complete.
In operation, the front quarters, made up in any of the suggested forms or articles of chiffonier, book-case, wardrobe, and the like, being respectively placed in their positions, as hereinbefore indicated, upon the base 0 I00 and having a sliding hinged bearing above and below on the pin projections and resting on the central ball -bearings, the operator seizes the quartenfronts 13 B by the knobs b b and, pushing them sidewise awayfroin each other, in which direction they easily move, for the length of the guide-slots in the top and bottom plates, then gives them a quarterturn outwardly, and they move into the open position, as shown in Fig. III. Reverse the movement and they are closed, as shown in Figs. I and II.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a folding bed having a chiifonier or book-case connected therewith I5 by means of guide-pins and guides at the top and bottom and supported upon ball-bearings,
of the base provided with a hinged extension at each end adapted to receive and support the sliding front parts when open, snbstan- 2o tially in the manner shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
