MEANS FOR SECURING GLASS PLATES IN WINDOWS OF SII'OVES AND FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,904, dated July 12, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURA C. BALLENTINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing Glass Plates in Stove or Furnace Windows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in the means employed in securing glass windows in the doors or other parts of cooking and heating stoves, ranges, and furnaces.
Heretofore glass windows have been used in stoves, &c;; but it has been difficult to preserve the glass and prevent it from breaking as the stove is heated. As constructed the edges of the glass plate of the window have been allowed to be in direct contact with the metal frame of the window. Said edges would therefore become heated before the center or main portion of the plate, which causes said plate to crack.
The object of my invention is to obviate this difficulty by preventing the edges of the glass plate from coming in direct contact with the metal frame and causing all parts of the glass plate to become equally and gradually heated.
With this object in view my said invention consists, essentially, in interposing a packing of asbestus or other suitable material which is a non-conductor of heat between the edges of the glass plate and the metal frame of the window.
The preferred means of embodying my said invention I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which it is shown as applied to the door of a cooking-stove.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stove provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail showing in elevation one corner of the door of the stove and the window in thesame. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of the same.
Referring to said drawings, A represents the door of the stove provided with an opening in the same, forming the window, said opening being of any desired form. The portion at around the opening forms the frame of the window. Said window is closed by a glass plate B, which is placed on the insideof the door and held in position by a frame 0, placed back of the glass and secured to the main window-frame or door by bolts E, having suitable nuts 6. When the nuts are screwed up on thebolts, the frame 0 clamps the edges of the glass plate between it and the main frame contraction and expansion of the various parts of the window.
While my invention is especially designed to be used with the Windows of stoves, &c., itis apparent that it, may be used with advantage in any case where glass is secured in metal and is subject to the action of heat.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. In a stove or furnace window, the combination of a metal frame, a glass plate secured therein, andapacking of asbestus surrounding theedges of the glass plate and interposed between said plate and the metal frame, substantially as shown and described, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a stove or furnace window, the combination of the metal frame a, the retainingframe 0, provided with retaining-bolts E, the
glass plate B, having its edges secured between the said frames, and the asbestus packing D, surrounding the edges of the glass plate and interposed between the same and the frames, substantially as shown'and described, as and for the purpose set forth.
