Description

BLODGETT & SWEET.
Domestic Oven.
Patented Dec. 5,1854;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE.
GARDNER S. BLODGETT AND PAUL T. SWEET, OF BURLINGTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVED OVEN FOR B AKING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 12,018, dated December 5, 1854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GARDNER S. BLODGETT and PAUL T. SWEET, both of Burlington, in the county of Ohittenden and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Ovens for the Purpose of Cooking or Baking Meats or other articles requiring the application of heat for that purpose; and we do hereby declare that the following is a true and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in constructing the oven of the material called galvanized iron, which is a good reflector of heat and not so susceptible of oxidation as ordinary sheet-iron, and rendering the oven more durable and more economical in the use of fuel, in combination with a particular form of furnace hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
We construct our oven of sheet or rolled galvanized iron in any desired form in conjunction with a horizontal furnace or stove but the form shown in Figure 2 in the accompanying drawings will be found most convenient for general purposes. Said Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the baker madeby us. The top, sides, and doors are made of .two thicknesses of the galvanized iron, with a space be tween the two thicknesses or sheets, which space is shown in Fig. 1.
The letter A in Fig. 2is a stove of a suitable size placed in the bottom of the oven in the position shown in said Fig. 2, with the pipe B attached to it. From this stove the necessary heat is produced. The letters 0 0 represent the doors standing open.
Fig. 1 in the accompanying drawings represents a section of said baker, in which the spaces between the outer and inner thickness or sheet of galvanized iron are shown by the letters a ot a. v
In such an oven as we have above described the heat generated from the stove is confined to the interior of the oven, the galvanized iron being a good reflector of heat, and thus a higher temperature can be obtained in the inside of the oven with a much smaller amount of fuel than is required with the ovens now in use.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The use of galvanized iron in the construction of ovens for the purpose of cooking or baking meats and other articles, incombination with this form and kind of furnace, substantiallyin-the manner and for the purposes hereinabove described.
