Description
N. MASON.
Cooking Range.
No. 10,046. Patented Sept. 27, 1853.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICHOLAS MASON, OF ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS.
COOKING-RANGE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,046, dated September 2'7, 1853.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, NICHOLAS Mason, of Roxbury, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved CookingRange; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed draw ings, in which Figure l is an isometric view of the range; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the ovens, fire box and water heater; Fig. 3, a transverse section upon the line A A of Fig. 1. Fig. 4, a transverse section through the fire box, hot air chamber, etc.
The nature of my invention consists in the adaptation of two ovens to the range and in such an arrangement of fines that either one or both of them may be heated as required;
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
13 is the fire box; C the upper oven; D the lower oven; a, a damper for the purpose of managing the flues.
When it is desired to use but one oven, the damper a is placed in position seen in Fig, 2. From the flue L the heatpasses through the opening 9 into the space It which entirely surrounds the hot chamber S, the cover of which is seen raised at T in Fig. 1. This chamber serves the purpose of keeping dishes, meats, etc., hot, and has been found in practice to be a valuable addition to a range. From the space R around this chamber the heat passes off at the opening h.
U is the water heater and 1s formed by constructing one of the jambs of the fire box hollow as seen in Fig. 2. By this means the heat which usually escapes into the masonry of the range is economized, and the back plate of the fire bOX may be used for the purpose of heating an air chamber V, Fig. 4, which has hereto-fore not been practicable when water backs were employed.
The advantages possessed by this range over all others with which I am acquainted are many. By the employment of two ovens both puddings and meats may be cooked at the same time, without injuring the flavor of the one by the other, and by the arrangementof fines which I have adopted, either one or both of them may be in operation at the same time.
I am aware that hot air chambers have been applied to ranges for the purpose of heating meats, dishes, etc., and also that hot water spaces have been applied to the sides of the grates instead of at the back. I therefore lay no claim to such devices although I have introduced a description of them above to facilitate the understanding of my range; but
Vv hat I do claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 'is
The employment of two ovens in combination with the peculiar arrangement of the fines around their top, bottom, back and sides, by which I am enabled to heat five sides of either one or both of them at a time as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature.
