UNITED STATES? PATENT oF-FICE.
JACK WM. JAMES, org MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
ORNAMENTAL CURB-BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,868, dated July 12, 1892. Application filed February 18, 1892. Serial No. 421,996 (No model.)
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACK JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Curb-Bits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel ornamental curb-bit; and it consists in the features of construction and the combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a curb-bit constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the ornamental attachment for one of the cheek-pieces or side bars of the bit, and Fig.3 is a detail perspective view of a driving-rein bit constructed according to my invention.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention,I will now describe the same in detail,,referring to the drawing Fig. 1, where the numerals 1 inclicate the cheek-pieces or side bars, 2 the bitbar or mouth-piece, and 3 the rein-rings of acurb-bit.
To render the bit handsome and attractive, the cheek-pieces or side bars are each provided with an attached ornamental plate 4, formed tapering in the direction of its length to correspondwith the tapered construction of the cheek-pieces or side bars. The edges of the plates are formed integral with tonguepieces 5, adapted to be clasped round the inner surfaces of the cheek-pieces for the purpose of securing the plates inposition. The plates extend continuously along the cheekpieces and terminate at or near the lower ends thereof, and the exposed surfaces of the plates are ornamented with any desired designsuch, for instance, as fox-houndschasing a fox. The extremities of the cheek-pieces or side bars, which extend above the mouthpiece or bit-bar for the attachment of the head-stall, are each provided with an ornamental plate 6, having tongue-pieces 7 at its edges, adapted to be clasped round the inner surfaces of such extensions in a manner similar to the plates 1.
The rein-rings 3 are preferably mounted from the lower ends of the cheek-pieces or side bars, and each rein-ring is covered on its outer-surface with adisk 9, having tonguepieces 10 at its periphery to clasp round the opposite surface of the ring. The exposed surface of the disk is preferably ornamented in imitation of the dial-plate of a watch or time-piece, and the plates 6 on the extensions of the cheek-pieces above the mouth-piece or bit-bar are ornamented with representations of horses; but I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to any particular ornamentation of the several attached "plates, for obviously various ornamental designs can be employed without altering the character of my invention.
The ornamental plates can be plated with nickel, silver, or gold or other metal, and they serve to cover and protect the outer surfaces of the cheek-pieces and the rein-rings, while imparting theretoa very attractive appearance.
The ornamental plates can be stamped from thin sheets of the desired metal, and, as the tongue-pieces are integral therewith, they can be readily applied to any bits already in use. I do not, however, confine myself to the use of the tongue-pieces for attaching the ornamental plates, as the latter can be otherwise attached.
In Fig. 3 I have exhibited an ordinary driving-rein bit having the rein-rings 12, provided with ornamental disks 13, substantially as described with reference to Fig. 1, except that a different ornamentation of the disks is illustrated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. An ornamental bit consisting of a bitbar having rein-rings covered at-their outer sides by ornamental disks, the edge portions of which extend round and are secured to the rings, substantially as described.
2. An ornamental curb-bit consisting of a bit-bar having tapering cheek-pieces covered at their outer sides by tapering ornamented plates extending along the length of the tapering cheek-pieces and formed at the edges with tongue-pieces, which are clasped round the inner sides of the cheek-pieces, substantially as described.
3. An ornamental curb-bit consisting of a In testimony whereof I have hereunto set bit-bar and tapering cheek-pieces having reinmy hand and affixed my seal in presence of IO rings, said tapering cheek-pieces and reintwo subscribing Witnesses. rings being covered at their outer sides by 5 ornamented plates formed at the edges with JACK JAMES tongue-pieces, which are clasped round the Witnesses: cheek-pieces and the rein-rings, substantially J NO. 1. SAMUELS,
as described. G. W. MILLER.
