Description
2 (No Model.) 2 2 R. OLIVER.
EAR RING SHIELD. v 7 No 249,202. I Patented N0v1.8,1"881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC RICHARD OLIVER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
EAR-RING SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 249,202, dated November 8, 1881.
Application filed July 20, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD OLIVER, ofthe city of Brooklyn, county of' Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in EarRing Shields, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanyin drawings It has been found to be a matter of considerable utility to protect valuable stones when set in ear-rings from observation at times, and various devices in the nature of shields have been constructed for this purpose; but they have generally proved either very expensive, very fragile, or too heavy for the comfort of the wearer. Gold shields and shields made of enameled metal have'been most commonly used.
. and also from the fact thatjoints between different portions of such material are almost invisible.
My invention will be clearly understood from the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters refer to similar parts.
Figure 1 represents a view ot the ear-ring within one half of the casing or' shell; Figs. 2 and 3, views of the two halves of the shell, and Fig. 4 a view of the ear-ring closed.
0 represents the ear-ring: A and B the two halves of the hemispherical inclosing-shield. These halves are provided with corresponding openings, so that when they are closed together a passage is left for the support of the ear-ring. y
The shells are made by turning the rubber or celluloid with a proper tool, and should be made very thin. The lap-joints by which the hemispheres are fitted together sh oulld be carefully made, and when the shield is properly constructed the joint between the hemispheres will be practically invisible.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved ear-ring shield, which consists of two notched hemispherical portions provided with suitable lap-joints and composed of hard rubber or celluloid, and adapted to include and conceal the jewel of an ear-ring, substantially as described.
