BADGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGO HEssELBAnTH, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and resident of Greifswald, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a badge which indicates whether the person who wears the same is engaged or free. 'It very often happens in large societies where the members do not all know one another, that young peofree; it is of course very awkward to ask a comparative stranger such a question; the badge which forms the object of the present invention, serves as means for indicating whether the person who wears the badge is engaged or free.
In the accompanying drawing the badge is shown in its preferred form of execution.
Figure 1 represents the badge for engaged people and Fig. 2 represents the same for free people. Fig. 3 is a back view of the badge and shows how the lateral parts of the badge are removed to be replaced by another part.
The badge has preferably the shape of a four leafed clover. The upper and lower foils are fixed by soldering or in any suit- Specification of Letters Patent.

the pin and they preferably are ornamented with appropriate signs, such as a cupid, an anchor or the like. The two side foils are removably mounted upon the horizontal arm of the pin for example by means of a sleeve fixed upon the rear surface of the foil and adapted to be pushed over the end of the horizontal arm of the pin.
On the front surface of the two lateral foils the word engaged or the word free is written, so that the side foils bearing the proper indication can be worn by the person who wears the badge.
The badge can be used as scarf pin, as brooch or as any other ornament.
I claim An improved badge comprising in combination a pin, a horizontal arm at the upper end of said pin, two foils rigidly fixed on said horizontal arm and suit-ably ornamented on the front surface, and two foils which bear inscriptions, removably mounted upon the ends of said horizontal arm, so that the badge has the shape of a four leafed clover, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
