Rm EB PL m 0 B M m E m Patented June 28, 1892..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. COOPER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO Y ROBERT PORTERS SONS, OF SAME PLACE.
SHEET-METAL BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 478,049, dated June 28, 1892.
Application filed March 5, 1892.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Gnonen B. COOPER, a citizen of the United States. residingin the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a sheet-metal box having its side pieces formed with tongues which extend beyond the length proper of the side pieces, the tongues of two of the side pieces being slitted to receive the tongues of the other side pieces, and the connected tongues being bent in opposite directions, so that each tongue of one side piece rests against the adjacent sid'e piece, thus forming angular locks atthe corners of the box, whereby the side pieces are firmly and reliably connected in a simple, inexpensive, and practical manner.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of the box embodying my invention in opened-out condition. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section of the box on line an ac, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of one of the corners of the box.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a sheet-metal box, which is formed of the bottom 13, side pieces 0 O and D D, the tongues E and F, and slits G. The tongues E are 'at the ends of the side pieces D, an d the tongues F at the ends of the side pieces 0, it being noticed that said tongues project beyond the Serial No. 423857. (No model.)
length proper of thenespective side pieces and that the members of each pair of tongues E and F extend at a right angle to each other. The slits G are formed in the sides D on the lines of one side of the bottom B and near the place of junction of the same with the tongues E and made of such lengths as to freely receive the tongues F and permit them to pass fully through the same.
When the sides 0 and D are turned up, the
tongues F are inserted into the slits G and then bent on the outer faces of the sides D. The tongues Gare also bent on the outer faces of thesides O, the tongues E and F of each corner now extending at an angle to each other and resting against the respective sides. By these provisions the side pieces arefirmly connected at the corners of the box, the joints being tight in their nature and soldering is rendered unnecessary unless when the box is to contain fluid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I j A sheet-metal boxhaving its side pieces provided with tongues at their sides, one of each adjacent pair of tongues having a slit at its connection with its side receiving the other tongue of said pair, and said tongues being in contact with the outer faces of the adjacent sides, substantially as described.
' GEORGE B. COOPER.
