, ATTORN UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMANDA L. WEEKS, OF NEW'YORK, N. Y.
ABDOMINAL. BELT FOR CORSETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,976, dated June 28, 1892.
Application filed November 25, 1891. $erial No. 413,117. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AMANDA L. WEEKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Corset-Belts and Corset Attachments; andl do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the'art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to supply a belt or corset attachment which can be readily adapted and attached to a corset and be held in place from upward and downwardmovement and be readily removed without inconvenience and without injury to the corset. This belt will be of great service in all cases where firm carefully-regulated pressure is needed for the abdomen. The painful pressure of those mechanical contrivances used at the present is avoided and replaced by elastic support. The usefulness of the invention will be therefore appreciated by those who are very stout, by those who suffer from pendulous abdomens, and by those who have undergone grave surgical operations upon the abdomen. In the latter class of cases there is a disposition to hernia, which can be overcome by. this support in a way that is comfortable to the person.
' Figure 1 represents the front view of acorset to which a belt has been attached, and Fig. 2 the back view of the same.
A represents a corset, and B B two bands having the elastic portions 1) b. Each band is formed of a pair of sections, and one end of each of the four sections is attached to one or the other of the retaining-slips C (J. The
other ends of the two pairs of sections are united by the buckles d d. The retainingslips C O are laced together and held in position on the back of the corset by the hooks c 0 cc, which prevent their movement either up or down. The bandsare prevented from slipping upwardly on the front of the corset by the hooks a a a a. The buckles d (1 permit the bands to be tightened or loosened at pleasure, and the supporting device may be attached to or removed from the corset at pleasure without in any mannerinjuring the latter.
Having described my invention, I claim The combination, with a corset, of a supporting device consisting of two retainingslips laced together and removably attached to the back of the corset, and two bands, each having an elastic portion and each being divided into two sections, one end of each of taining-slips and the other ends of each pair being united by a buckle, and hooks on the front of the corset to prevent the upward movements of the bands, substantially as specified.
